445 cam advice
« on: April 11, 2015, 02:51:59 PM »
looking for cam advice for my 445. building 445 with stock 66 gt heads streetmaster intake and fpa headers. my last 2 cams for the 390 were comp cams 270h and the 280h magnum series, both were good cams. edelbrock  heads aren't really in the budget this year since i would have to change out my headers. any advice would be great.

The 66 GT heads "C6AE R" and Edelbrock head exh port.
Should be able to get a seal with the FPA headers on the Ed's.
It's the bottom of the port that has the issue and the C6 and Ed are pretty close.
edit: My cam picks are all over the map so..... ::)

The C6AE U I believe is similar to the C7AE A head which does have the lower exhaust port.
Like the D2 and C8 in the pictures.
I don`t have a set of C6 U`s so I can not measure them.
I have heard of these Performance World heads.
They are a copy of the Edelbrock head.
Caveat emptor.

You can port what you have and make some decent power.  I did the same on my 445, took D2s to match the headers and had them done with CJ valves and port work for just under 280 cfm at .600, that's more than out of the box Edels.  I ended up putting about 750 into castings I already owned, including new guides, springs, valves, retainers, seals, etc.

Cam depends on use, but on mt 445 in the truck, I did a 282S copy from Bullet, spread the centers to 112 to calm the idle a bit and out it on 104 center with 10:1 compression.  It runs REAL good, but would likely make a little more with a 110 or 108 LSA, I was trying to keep it a little less ratty on the bottom with a 4x4 truck.

If it were me, hydraulic roller. They allow grinds not possible any other way giving better flow for not so great heads.
