Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: Any glass men here
« on: June 07, 2022, 11:19:37 AM »
Just my .02 but if you have chrome surround I have heard that once the glass is out, remove it. Put the chrome trim in the new gasket, then the gasket on the windshield. This is something an old Ford installer stated. It makes sense to me, but more often than not you see the gasket go on the glass, then fight the trim....vastly increasing the odds of messing up said trim.
I have not done it, but will be doing it soon on my truck.

It is almost painful at times! Very frustrating, but I guess kids don't know what they don't know. Do you sit and wonder, had You Tube, internet, been around when I was working on stuff as a youngster, that you could have done so much more! Info was hard to come by then but we got by, leaned. Now info is on every corner, but some how most are blind to it.  We were talking about this last week....youtube, gps, cell phones......versus ask a friend, or neighbor, go watch and learn, you want to travel, best go buy or barrow a map, mobile phone...that meant a 20ft cord on the wall phone.
Not sure how you can teach this younger generation how to learn....they have the tools, but seems the will is lacking in my opinion....not to mention kids are not the best at knowing when they see bad info too....there is a lot of that in the modern world.  I have tried to teach mine the best I could, and to use logic, basically think on how to think but it has been a battle.  In the long run life will teach them. Your broke and have to make ends meet you learn to fix stuff pretty quick, then they become the old grouchy fart like me in the end HAHA. Experience pays dividends...just takes time.

The MPG surprises me. But I don't how big you went, etc. tire wise. But that is good info. These old trucks are not aerodynamic that is for sure. But they are lighter overall...IDK but I really figured on more but it is what it is and there is no lack of torque is there  ;D

People over the years learned these are easy to mess with and tough, but the butchery is insane! Mine had square tubing welded on the shock mounts so they could run a different set of shocks...not better, just what they had from something else. Luckily the wiring was good, and no major frame issues minus a "custom" receiver hitch. But mine was really a "cherry" find around here for what you normally see.

This thread proves one thing, we all run into issues and changes along the way on our projects. Most of the cost us, but they also teach us.

I agree with all of that! Really wonder how a newer manual would help fuel economy. Be nice to have the gears in the housing but the advantage of an overdrive.
If time does not pass me by, I would love to find a crew cab of that era and do the Cummins swap. Given what new trucks cost, and the fact that I can live without all the bells and whistles, it seems like a no brainer. Update the drive line, but one of the best diesels, and the old Ford Crew cab body. If one could refrain from the urge to put 40's on it and roll coal, I would guess you would have a rig that could easily get upper 20's for MPG, or better, and do about all you would want minus hot shot work.
Time, money, sweat, tears, and box of curse words is all one needs.
Good luck on the project, and keep us updated.

Punch Dots work too...one dot 1.75 two dot ....etc.
Lazer etc....few ways to do it, but you want the best, longest lasting, cheapest way! Sometimes hard to get it all in manufacturing.

I am pretty sure you can swap to a newer manual trans if you wanted to just fyi. It all depends on your needs but the kits exist. Having a divorced T-case you can do about anything as long as room allows.  Cool old trucks. Torque won't be an issue, nor will gearing HAHA.

Pretty much where I am on mine, but waiting to get my shop built so I can bring the bed inside and start on it. It won't be super nice, but it will be daily driver quality. I had to fire it up over the weekend to give it the bi-monthly warm up/run oil through it....mainly to hear the 445  :)

RustyCrankshaft hit the nail on the head. The green energy sell is a pipe dream and only exists to create new markets, make more money. At least at current technology. We all want to save our planet, but no one wants to look past the commercials or news and actually research anything. Nothing green is actually green that is being mass marketed. But many of politicians are invested in it, so push push push the idea...sounds good must be good.
I hear what was said on the gas prices and then adding inflation into the mix. Agree but disagree. Here is AR I went from filling up once a week at $55 to $90. Inflation is a constant, but almost doubling a cost week in and week out hits everyone's pocket book. Then it gets worse as time goes on with more price increases, which we have seen historical levels on since 2019. How does inflation work there? Adjust gas to make it seem like it does not hit so hard....well what about the extra food costs, utility costs...in the end it is less and less money for end consumers, because we are the ones that pay. Business gets effected but they have the ability to pass some of the costs on to...yep us. Time will tell but fuel prices normally are a big economic indicator/driver, but in this new market, who knows...

FE Technical Forum / Re: FPA headers in a 4x4 Ford
« on: February 07, 2022, 04:15:40 PM »
Ross,

How different are the TFS Heads vs. BBM on the Exhaust ports/bolt location. Wondering if that is causing the main issue aka relocating the normal layout.
I mapped out my Heddman's and the BBM heads. There was a difference port layout wise, but far from .25. I think the largest variance was .125 but that equated to a 1/16 per side and the hedder side was larger, so no concern. I run a deep sump Milodon pan with no issues clearance wise due to the head change. This is on a '75 F250 4x4.
Just wondering if Trick Flow really moved the ports or changed some angles.

Pan

The only real issue I ran into was the change of heads, yielded a different landing point for the collectors on the hedders. Had to massage a tube, but again nothing major, no worse than needed to get the cheap heddmans to fit originally. These are the 89120 part #.

FPA makes some good hedders and they can modify them for you if memory serves. That is what will go on mine next time.

Just food for thought, the re-bearing will help with the oil pressure, but wear on the rockers bleeds a lot of pressure/oil off. While you have it down, I would recommend checking/repair anything out of spec and limiting some of the oil to the heads. Easy to do even if you don't pull the heads completely off. Just my .02. Very very clean motor.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Intake leaking oil back of motor
« on: December 13, 2021, 06:12:52 PM »

I used a method similar to Rory's but not nearly as easy as it sounds. Seems room is always an issue, and note that I used BLACK Right Stuff, there is a grey. Note 2 I also used it for all gaskets(lightly) etc. I broke several of the "snap style" razor knifes, could not make much else work. I ended up sharpening a scraper and using it with a hammer. It sounds horrible and it was but the stuff hardened like metal.  It took a lot of prying, cutting, cussing.  By prying, I mean so much so it was scary.  I really thought I was going to chip/break something, but there was no other way minus heat.  I still wonder if somehow I got a bad can of the stuff, or maybe the stars aligned not in my favor.  It was definitely one of those deals that will stick with you, let us put it that way.

Since then I have used both the TA-31 and the DOW as Brent recommends, and both are quality materials and much easier to work with.  The Right Stuff only if there is no other choice in my book.

Any updates?

I will comment on my experience with this exact issue and exact sealer. Same as you, leaking at the back. I cleaned it with brake cleaner really really well and put a gob on my finger and pressed it in, smeared it all over.  It look armature hour since there was not a lot of room to maneuver, but it worked.
Is it the best and most aesthetically appealing way, no, but it can work if that is not of importance.

I will say that the RIGHT STUFF (BLACK) almost welded that intake to the rest of the engine. Honestly thought I was going to destroy the RPM intake trying to remove it after the motor spun a bearing. I personally will not use it again unless it is on something I expect to never come off. Just my .02 and your mileage may vary.

No expert here but Horrible Freight's 1/2" TQ Wrenches have been tested across time and do surprisingly well.  Not USA made, wish it was, just saying because they do get a bad wrap, often deservingly.  I have checked them against Craftsman and Husky and all are the same. Also checked 3/8" of same brands(inch lbs) against my dad's old beam type. All the same. That one surprised me, why I don't know.

To me it comes down to what you are doing, and how often you use it. If you need it for your job, or daily etc. then spend the money. If you need one every 2-5 years like me, then try to save a penny.  Only time I have "needed" them recently was building my 445, my C6, and doing a 4x4 Hub Conversion on my Super Duty to eliminate the unit bearings.

Otherwise just give it two dugga duggas on the ol' Ingersoll Rand and move on....kidding.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: Broader C6 Oil Mods?
« on: August 20, 2021, 02:10:02 PM »
That is what I recall from my researching was around 20 ish horsepower. If I recall correctly a C4 fully built was still better cost wise, and friction wise...not assuming fitting to an FE etc.
In members projects there is an build on an F100 drag truck close to the top.....the poster, sorry I am bad with names, did A LOT with his C6. Nice work, lightened components etc. He may have the answers on the oil mods as well. If you are looking to get the absolute most out of it, that may not hurt.

Private Classifieds / Cruise-O-Matic Transmission and Other Odds Ends
« on: August 19, 2021, 01:47:21 PM »
I bought a motor/trans combo in hopes of good block/rotating parts etc...most of it I do not need.

Transmission seems to be all there, dirty, but not too bad at all considering the age.  Code is PFB-A with short tail shaft, flange style yoke. Aluminum case and bell, cast center section for an FE. Has cover, and TQ converter, all parts seem to be there, even the funky side cooler or what ever that is.  Kind of neat as I have not seen one of these.  Sold as core, as is where is, $150 o.b.o you tell me?

Will likely have a set of 68 FE heads, 2v cast intake, carb, and other odds and ends that was bolted to it. I have to tear into it to confirm exactly what it is, it was rebuilt at some point as it has tag on the side stating as such....loving the boat plug type freeze plugs HAHA....odds are it is a 352 from the era as all of it fits the story, came out of an old truck, said it was a 390, info points to a 352 yada yada you all know the story.  It is all there though which is not common around here and it was cheap so I made the gamble.

Also, I still have a like new Canton FE 4x4 oil pan with pickup. Someone buy this thing. Has 8 dyno pulls on it. Black in color.  Otherwise it will end up getting customized....hate to butcher a new pan but will if it does not sell.

Anyway, before scrapping things out and knowing things are hard to find, I wanted to give the opportunity out here. If you are interested in anything let me know. Open to offers/trades, ship on your dime if you want it, but definitely prefer local pick up. Central, Arkansas.
You can PM and we can work off text for pics etc.  I will likely start the motor tear down next week.

Will consider trades: Interested in Streetmaster, Victor, or RPM intake, ....aftermarket rocker stands/end supports, new rocker shafts or if anyone has some Morel rollers they want to part with...plus boot money on my end if needed. Just throwing that out there.

Thanks for looking.

Yeah that Power Wagon and the pre-'73 Highboy could be redone and be worth some good money depending on how bad they are. I myself would love to have a crack at the Power Wagon. Be a cool rig to put around town in. I would really be curious to see what those two go for. To bad I am a long ways away too.
