FE Technical Forum / Re: NOS 427 SOHC cam spec question
« on: June 15, 2020, 04:19:55 AM »
My engine was dynoed in a very similar configuration, although it does have a 4.00” stroke crank giving 452 ci, and my cams are 252 @0.050” and 0.582” lift. It has 10.3 to 1 static compression, and was run with a 750dp and 29 degrees total timing to suit 93 octane pump fuel. It made 553hp at 6300rpm. The heads are early iron heads, and pretty close to stock.

I have since changed the intake manifold to a Dove 8V Tunnel Wedge and a pair of 780vs Holleys. I haven’t had it dynoed in this configuration, but it certainly feels a lot stronger to my butt-o-meter. If you read any of the test literature from when these engines were released, they all state the 4V intake manifold suffered from poor distribution between cylinders. The factory 8V intake increased the hp by around 40hp.

I’ve owned a couple of mid ‘60s Pontiacs, but never got to do any engine work on them. But they still hold an interest in my automotive world.

I’m currently rebuilding the Max Wedge stroker to go in my ‘63 Dodge 330, after blowing a head gasket.

The headers have 2” primaries, not sure on length, but the local guy who built them tried to make them as equal in length as he could. The collectors are 4” diameter.

My car has had the shock towers and inner fenders cut away, but has the original front chassis rails. It uses the standard lower front control arms, tubular upper control arms that mount to the original upper mounts. Coil over shocks, and rack and pinion steering. Below is a picture of the engine bay with the 406 out of my Galaxie, I used that to get the car licensed.

I'm curious, which exhaust port did you get with your Pro-Ports?

Thanks for that.

Hopefully Blair might refresh my memory, but I think it has the Colvert exhaust port.

Todd, is this the engine that Leon built?

Yes, it is.

The power runs were done with the vacuum pump hooked up, it was pulling about 8” of vacuum.

VP MS109. Leaded racing fuel is now outlawed down here.

This engine is destined for my 64 Fairlane drag car. Apart from the compression ratio, it could easily be run as a serious street/strip type engine. I sourced the heads, intake manifold, rockers, cam and pistons from Blair Patrick, and my brief to him was I wanted a strong, reliable, relatively low maintenance engine to run in my drag car. As I only plan to run the car a couple of  times a year, I didn't want a highly strung race engine, but something that was easily identifiable by looks and performance as an FE. I think he met the brief perfectly, and I'm very happy with the result. I think there is still a bit more hp to be had from the engine with a pair of more tuneable carbs, but the 660's fit nicely inline and will look correct under the air bonnet in the car.

Below is the chart from the dyno. The dyno operator started the run at 5000rpm, as that is the stall speed of the converter I will be running. He did do a few lower rpm pulls before hand, and the torque was a bit higher at lower rpm's, but I don't have any evidence of that, so those are the numbers I'm working with.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Roller Rockers and Baldy Valve Covers

I ran T&D street rockers under baldy valve covers with a cam that was around 0.580” lift, no clearance issues.

Not wanting anymore 'stuff' in the engine bay than necessary I use a tachometric relay from early EFI systems to control the pump. No tach signal, no pump. Has a start circuit bypass.

Hey Andy, do you have a part number for that relay? I’ve used a similar type relay out of an early 80’s VW before, but I’ve lost the part number. It worked well, would allow the pump to prime for a few seconds when the ignition was first switched on, then would not run unless it had a tach signal.

Well done. I know how nervous you must have felt. I was nervous as hell when I first fired my engine up, hoping I hadn’t messed up putting together a rare, exotic, 55 year old engine.

Nice to see a formal box roof every now and again. Very nice!

Thanks. While I do also like the fastback body style, especially on a race car, I very much like the Thunderbird inspired formal roof.
