I have 15* initial, 37* total.

Right now it has a Holley 750dp, nothing fancy.  I put an AED 750dp on it, no change on the topend, think it's in the fuel system.  It has a Carter electric returnless, think it may be a little weak although this isn't a killer combo.

I'm looking for a pair of slapper bars to put on it, should be plenty for this mild combo.

FE Technical Forum / 12 second pass (other thread got me thinking)??

OK, piling on.  Toying with idea of trying a few passes at the FE Reunion in April.

63 Marauder, pretty much full weight, fiberglass hood, figure 4350 with me in it
390 .030", Edelbrocks with cleanup figure 270/190 flow, 270H, 750dp on a Performer RPM, 9.5:1, FPA TriYs into typical 2.5" exhaust with H pipe.   Combo is pretty common, seems like 400hp is attainable?.

T10 with 3.50 Open.  Tires right now are 255/70/15 on rear, may go 275/60/15 which are a little shorter for more gear.

Car feels OK, pulls well in low gears.  Lays over on topend and I'll be working very hard to get it figured out as soon as it warms a bit.  Open rear is a concern but no funds to change that at the moment, if I do it I'm going 31spl and better carrier so big investment.  With the T10 though, it is lazy in first and actually doesn't really spin unless you work hard.

15/36-37* in the distributor, in by 2800rpm.  I have a wideband on it and have some goofy air/fuel readings so will sneak up on it, checking fuel pressure soon.

So, assuming I get it squared away, I have access to a chassis dyno and do whatever it takes to get it right, will this kind of combo sneak into the 12s?  I'm assuming, again, it will hook somewhat on street tires.

Figuring a good street motor at 1.3hp/cube, you're looking at 40hp with a stroker setup, all things being the same (assuming heads/cam aren't too small with cubes).  A roller cam is going to run $1000 (cam, lifters, springs, pushrods bought cheap) to setup, and assuming it's roughly the same size, maybe 15hp over a solid flat with mild lift?  Porting stock heads, figure what, $1000?  Then you'd likely need more cam lift as most times porting effects high lift to larger extent.

Tough to quantify, but then figure in that a stroker is going to be strongest all throughout the curve, not just at peak.  Too many variables and testing to really know, but I'd say the stroker does hang in there fine if just looking at $$/hp.

At 7psi, that 350 would have to be making ~700hp N/A to make 1000hp boosted, don't know how streetable I'd call it.

That is easily done in todays world. Turbos make 1000hp street engines pretty commonplace anymore. Heck, try 2000+hp for guys that have endless wallets.

Yes, but at 7psi?

Alright, had to make up a pointer because of the old damper/new timing cover mismatch.  It was tuned by ear to this point, and not really run hard.

It was at 13/33*, ran it up to 16/36*.  I didn't feel like throwing another bushing in it to give more advance, and figure with the heavy car/small cam/tall gear it can use a conservative tune.

When running before, it did have a definite surge to it when going 3/4 throttle and getting up over 3500rpm, that is now gone.  I thought it was going to be carb, but wanted to get timing squared away.  Happy to find the "surging" was timing related, but surprised that just 3* would cause it.  Timing is in at 2700rpm, so it's been at full advance when this occurs.

Going to start on the carb now, setup the idle mixture and that's it to this point....runs ok but can definitely use some tuning.

I can get 93oct here in VA, so will try it at 38*

Sounds good, thank you

FE Technical Forum / Baseline timing for Edelbrock headed combo...
« on: May 16, 2013, 11:17:41 AM »
I've done some reading online about timing for combos using Edelbrock heads, just wanted to see if there is as consensus on where to start.

Combo is:
750dp
Performer RPM
Performer 60059 heads with no chamber work
Comp 270H installed 4* advanced as suggested by comp 224*/.519 on 110lsa
1 3/4" FPA Tri-Y
9.5:1 nominal CR
3.00 rear T10tranny in '63 Marauder, going to 3.50s soon

No plans to put it on any type of dyno, so was going to set it up with 16* initial, 36* total in around 2500rpm.  Does this sound about right for the combo with these heads?

That's good to hear, thanks Ross.  Being a Ford, half surprised it didn't require a crank swap  :)

FE Technical Forum / Old style dampener to new style
« on: May 06, 2013, 12:35:14 PM »
Hello all.  Had the '63 Mercury back on the road for a bit now.  Just to get it rolling, had to use the old intregral pulley dampener on it that was originally on the car.  It's pretty rough, so I'd like to get a newer style like a PowerBond and put it on there, which also would work with my newer timing pointer setup.  Does anyone know off the top of their head if the two dampener/pulley setups have the same spacing?

FE Technical Forum / Re: What's your favorite DCR calculator?

Very nice, never done this before.  I had to guesstimate a couple items on my 390 as it's been so long since I was in the engine, or plain don't have some info, but came up with 8.011 DCR.

« on: December 04, 2012, 12:10:08 AM »
Another new guy here.  I've been on the Network54 FE site for a long time, don't post much but check it frequently.  After seven years (long story there) finally got my '63 Marauder on the road with quite a bit of help.  Hoping to work out the bugs in the next few months and have a decent street car for the summer.  Original Z code/auto car, converted to T10 for now as I got a great package deal on all the conversion parts.  Running the original 3.00 rear now, going to be putting together a Trak Lok with used 3.50s in a standard carrier after I finish moving and pop them in to see how they work.

Car was a mess, the RF fender, R door, both rockers, and both quarters have been replaced.  Not very "original" in any way, or valuable, so decided to set it up with an early/mid '60s street style.  Running a '78 LTD disc brake setup in front, but otherwise stock suspension, PS, manual brakes.

Motor consists of:
.030" 390 105 block
750DP
Performer RPM
Edelbrocks 60069 with some bowl work and valve job.  It's been too long to remember details, but they flow right at 270/195 @ .600" as I recall
Comp 270H 224/224 .519/.519 installed at 106ICA on 110LSA
9.5:1 with TRW forged pistons (model no. not handy)
Stock crank and rods with ARP bolts
Canton windage tray with stock pan
MSD Distributor and 6A ignition
FPA 1 3/4" tri y's to non-mandrel 2.5" exhaust

Still finalizing wheels/tires.  Cragars on their now are OK, but also have a set of Torque Thrusts for it, will likely end up 275/60/15, so basically 28" tire.  Car had worn out springs in it and now with the new springs the front tires are too short, going to a 225/75/15.

Goal is to be a reliable street car.  Hoping it can go low 13s, possibly high 12s in good air.  Probably ambitious but we'll see, definitely will take a lot of tuning/tweaking from where it is now.

Will be asking a bunch of questions as I get to work on the little remaining items, great forum you guys have here!!
