I guess the cold weather must do something to those people !  :o

I'm guessing the lack of sunlight...  That's some funny stuff!

Since it is apparently out of the vehicle I would say it's a no brainer and complete tear down with removal and replacement of cam bearings and oil passage cleaning.  Then you know exactly what you have.  If you don't do your own work then it becomes a bit more debate-able as I am not very trusting of other peoples work.

Anybody here familiar with HP Tuners?

5
I have forscan, but only for diagnostics, from what I can see on their site it doesn't allow tuning, it basically can do a lot of what dealer can do but actual tuning seems to be seperate from changing options/functions

Anybody done this from scratch?  I have several vehicles and rather than purchase a tuner for each vehicle I thought why not just do it myself!  The information I'm finding doesn't really make much sense to me though.  Do I still have to purchase software for each vehicle, if that's the case while it would be interesting it wouldn't be worth the money.

Anyone on here done this?

Well that's just fascinating.  It's a closed system (with leakage obviously) so it makes no sense to me how the vacumm can cause that kind a pressure difference.  The aeration just at idle was eye-opening, looks like one of Conleys pumps is needed here!  I'd be curious about a diesel oil for the anti-foaming but the shear volume of oil being thrown around I doubt there would be any signficant difference between oils of the same viscosity.

Good Luck!

looking at the internals of that vane pump vs yours looks like a no-brainer.  The Godzilla block looks awesome, but having that oil pump gives me the "what were they thinking" vibe; Especially for the super duty line.

Well, if you're running a carb it's as simple as Fuel, air and spark.  I would imagine the air is fine so are you losing gas or spark when this occurs?  Spark could definitely go away all at once, a carb usually will give just a bit of sign as the gas gets to the bottom of the float bowl, but not necessarily.  You'll have to investigate when it happens while everything is hot, Pack some gloves!

Seems interesting, if you have a LOT of time to burn!

Since there is a direct correlation to the switch, maybe unplug everything on the switch and see if any voltage is backfeeding to the switch that shouldn't be?  maybe start pulling all fuses to the bare minimum for vehicle to run and see if can isolate circuit that way?  I'm just guessing.  I assume the sensors use a 5 volt ref signal, any chance that voltage gets wonky with headlights on?

Also anything that your checking voltage on I would check voltage using the actual ground wire for that component as opposed to leaving meter hooked to a chassis ground.  Obviously seeing if different with headlights on vs off.

If lots of components get 12V from the headlight switch could even unplug and maybe individually induce 12v to componenets 1 at a time from the plug.  Good luck

Do it once and do it right. (That does NOT involve a ball hone).

For some reason this time the bypass valve decided to open at 94 psi instead of 92 psi.  I can't explain that with the changing of the pickup!
show

If the pump is bypassing internally wouldn't the smaller pickup showing a restriction cause a bit of pull on the back side of relief valve possibly?

First, way cool!

I have to wonder about using the fixed orifice.  It seems to me the faster the engine turns the more oil it's going to be able to flow for a given pressure.  Which makes me think getting into cavitation due to excessive bypass may not happen quite as easily as it appears here.  At least with these oil pumps.

Also If your really bored  :D I'm curious how much a stock filter would bypass if any when cold, full RPM, etc.

One other thing, when you bolt a trans to the block, after it's bolted, there should be enough clearance between the flex plate and the converter to be able to turn the converter, to line up the holes.

Are you using a block plate, between the bell housing and the block?

Don't think I've had any trannys that you could turn converter with block bolted together,  I think I would be worried about enough pump engagement at that point
