pulleys don't line up?!?!
« on: February 14, 2017, 09:20:46 PM »
Has anyone seen this before?
It is a scat crank, I have new timing gears, no oil singer, new spacer and new balancer but when I install everything my pulley are one groove out.

I have a very similar setup with new SCAT stroker and balancer also. The water pump I have is cast iron and I cannot recall the pulley being so close to it.

When I get home I can send images of mine, everything seems to line up - would that help?

Can you post the brand of your new balancer as well?

Here are some images - might help a bit, not sure, image of the part number for the new balancer as well. Everything seems to line up nicely with this setup.

I am not sure how that could happen unless you have some wrong parts.  A small misalignment could happen from the crank, but not over 1/2 inch

I was going to say the same thing.  Did you get the pulleys in a set, or separately?

When you installed the crank spacer, did it push all the way back?
When you installed the balancer, how close did the end of the crank come to the end of the balancer?

I'm going to flip it over and pull the oil pan so I can see down inside the timing cover.....

Dunno if it's a common issue or what, but I had to sand the crankshaft keys to fit both the crankshaft and spacer.  It wanted to bind otherwise.

Ok, so today I pulled the pan and could no see any gaps BUT I think I may have pulled a rookie move. Is it possible to install the lower crank gear backwards? If it is, I think I found my problem.

If the crank gear is on backwards the timing chain would be seriously misaligned.  If it is, then what you said would make sense, because the crank gear has a relief in the backside to allow it to slide further onto the crank...

nope, timing chain is straight as an arrow and the timing marks are on the outside. Weird.

I'm going to tear down the from end next days off.
