My Fairlane usually overshadows my other F.E. recipient. Thought I’d throw an update out. 4.155 428 block getting line honed right now. It will receive a 4.250 Scatt crank, Molnar Rods, Diamond pistons. I’m using the not as popular as they once were Edelbrock heads.  Brent and I have arrived at a hydraulic roller, (his design) that I think will probably outperform several of my ideas. The only thing I’m not sure about is the intake manifold. This is my Dad’s old truck, when I was a kid we would stomp through some pretty impressive mud holes. He ran a factory 2x4 setup. So I have the dilemma of put an RPM on it, or grab the low rise 2x4 off the shelf, and do what I’d call the cool thing.  The rest of the truck will be NP435/205, front and rear Dana 60’s 38” Swampers.  I’m in the process of preparing it for the Factory green paint right now. Building 2 F.E.s at the same time is a rediculous amount of fun, completely impractical, and a touch expensive.

What, no pics? High Boys rock! And yes, you absolutely must put the 2x4 intake back on.  8)

Back in the 80's. My dad had a '75 4 door. 4V 390. Dana 60's both ends. Detroit Locker rear. 44" Super Swampers. Friggin truck was legendary.

I’ll get some photos up as soon as I can. I thought I had it all dialed in, but they won’t upload again. My dad put a 3” body lift on it, and I put 2” springs on recently. So I’m thinking there’s comfortable room for more tire.

I built the 390 4V in this guy ('75 F-250 Camper Special) a few years ago before I sold it.  Re-used the stock intake and heads, but did some light port cleanup and a 3 angle valve job.  Bumped the compression up to 9.5:1 with new pistons.  Added a dual pattern Howard's cam and long tube headers.  That thing would haul that truck along like no-bodies business.  I am sure it was putting down well in excess of 400 ft-lbs.  The stock manifold did fine given the application.

My spring tester should be here tomorrow I hope, then I can get these heads together finally. They came out 71-71.5 cc which will give me 10.4:1.  I did some Jane clean up and a gasket match to a Felpro gasket.

Don't forget, the numbers on the rocker stands face the intake manifold.

I used to have a ball in my old early '77 black Highboy, had come from NY so its 351M did not have the CA smog, and ran very well, was never stuck and never out-climbed. It got an injection of 427 in '86, an old mild race shortblock that had run 10.60s in a Falcon, with a set of stock CJ heads, a 291/541 Delong cam, and a Street Dominator and DP. Actually the same shortblock that is in my 406 car today- same rings since 1975! I could roll the throttle on in 3rd, and it would instantly blow off the 14-36.5 tires- did it one day while towing my 19 ft boat. Boat had white sides, so all you could see was the front half of the black pickup, a big white cloud, and the black Mercruiser drive sticking out of the cloud. I was coming home late one night up Hwy 80, pulled in to the toll booths at the Carquinez Bridge, and this dickweed Don Johnson clone pulled in beside in a 911S, and had this beautiful laquered-up blonde with immense naughty pillows on display, and he's blahblahblah in her ear. Then I noticed this clown had driving gloves on- really? So he pulls out and gets on it, shrieking away, and it's on- short-shifted into 3rd so I wouldn't break anything and let it eat- passed him at the top of 3rd when it was howling pretty good, and the blonde went hysterical with laughter

Waiting for parts and tools, I’ve been staring at these heads, and finally started to play with them some more. Removed some material around the guides, tried to straighten things up s little bit. A very intriguing hydraulic roller knocked on the door today, so things are coming together.

What would folks think of a tunnel wedge, and say 2 600s on a 461” truck engine? Too much intake?

If the heads/cam combo, hood clearance can support it, that would be a no brainer. The TW makes power, and is cool cool cool.  Had I had funds on building my 445 for my Highboy I would have went that route but I was penny pinching where I could.

It’s probably too much manifold. An RPM would work well. But it would definitely be cool.

Line hone should be done soon, balance work as well. I got 1 cylinder head assembled, everything is coming in 150lbs basically on the money, with little shim work, accidents happen. Decided on an RPM intake, and an 850. I’ve seen that work before once or twice. Hopefully I can start assembling a short block next week.
