FE Technical Forum / Re: 1970 f250 390 build

Fwiw, I believe the path to happiness is a well built stroked short block...especially in a pickup that won't be drag raced.  Performance minded heads are just icing for the cake.

I don't think anyone has mentioned it but unless the plan is to pull the dizzy somewhat regularly, I'd throw away the bronze gear.  They're more for niche applications.

Thanks Brent and everyone else that hangs their ass out their just so we can bitch.

Ha !  Now that is about the size of it  :)

knowledge that is not shared is eventually lost knowledge.

I greatly appreciate the advice from all the folks who offer it up here.  I surely hope the few Statler and Waldorf types don’t spoil that.

As for sharing of information, I’m pretty sure none of the builders here are patenting their engines.  All you have to do to gain your knowledge is buy an engine, or engine component configured to your needs/wants and copy it.

Coca Cola is not patented either.  It’s a trade secret.  So buy a can and copy it.  It’s that easy.

Hopefully this will help discourage the wet blanket treatment so we can keep on enjoying all the useful info we’ve been giving and getting.

dont get me wrong,i love anything FORD,the only downside i see is,if i were a young man and i wanted to build an engine,a post like that 777 hp would make a youngster say, to hell with the fe,im building a Cleveland. my dad had a junkyard when i was younger,i would have went the other way with influence like that, how many 777 hp 400 inch FEs do you see out there? sorry,i still liked seeing this post.

I had the same initial thought but then realized this clevor has 13.5 compression, a vacuum pump, and spins to 7grand... so got to keep it all in context.

Minimal specs will be given - as this is a blatant form of FREE ADVERTISING on this FE forum.

No wonder there are less and less users on this once busy forum.

Very sad to see.
All the upside down whackiness in the world and this is what bothers you?  Being a pill is no way to go through life.  You (everyone) needs to find what makes you happy and focus on that.

For soft metals like aluminum, might consider key locking inserts.  Time serts sometimes back out with the bolt.

For my own curiosity, what is the coolant capacity on your thunderbird with the 445?

I just don't think I am pulling much air, fan blades are ~1" back from the rad. face and it has to pull through radiator and condensor, and even the oil cooler for part of it and like I said shroud is a home brew not sealed well to the fan blades.

Where the fan sits in the shroud opening (about half in and half out) is more important than how close the fan is to the radiator.  In a car, you may not have the room for proper spacing of a belt driven fan within the shroud and kinda need an electric fan

Besides spinning the fan faster, pulley choice will spin the water pump faster which may or may not help your scenario.

Is your crank pulley equal or bigger than your fan pulley?  Going from an under drive crank pulley to a direct drive made enough improvement for me.

You can usually remove any lifters with the intake in place if you have a factory intake....maybe not with an aftermarket intake.

A push rod rubbing the valley splash shield will sound like lifter noise.

Hate to point fingers but...might want to install them yourself next time.  Maybe the "new" guy installed the bearings for you.

If you have space, a cheapo harber freight shop press works fine to install.

Have you looked at all the plugs yet?

Only leaking issue I've ever had was pre-bent and pre-flared stainless steel lines.  I believe that was due to the hardness of the stainless steel.  Tighten, loosen, retighten the leaky connections about 20 times stopped the leaks.  I would not flare that myself because it requires annealing to prevent cracks.

I normally use the EZ bend copper nickel line.  It's the easiest to bend and flare and it's very resistant to road salt.

For oil pressure line, I got part number 5723K601 from McMaster Carr.  It's oil resistance hose wrapped in a stainless steel braid and rubber anti-abrasion outer layer in pretty blue color.  Got it with 1/8 NPT ends.  Also got an oil gauge from McMaster Carr at the same time.  The hose is rated for -65F to 275F and plenty of pressure.

I realize you're half way into it and I'm kinda late, but some rental places have "concrete buggies".  Gasoline powered and haul about 1/4 of a yard per trip.  They'll haul from the street to the backyard and such.  Sometimes concrete delivery trucks charge you if you move too slow so have a helper.
