Title: Jay what's your thoughts on this site?
Post by: cjetmech on March 02, 2012, 06:38:41 PM
Just wanted to know if your happy with it and wondered if you had any plans to change or add stuff. FWIW I followed the feforum since the 90's but the last few yrs I think it kinda got off track. But this site seems like its getting better all the time. I like the high amount of tech content and low amount of OT BS. Thanks for setting it up.

I'm pretty happy with it so far.  It is really cheap to operate; costs me about three bucks a month, which is well worth it.  I've grown to like the format a little better than I did originally, and the group of people on this forum is really top notch in my opinion.  I share your view about the decline of the FE Forum, and I hope to keep adding more features and members to this site to continue to improve it.

There's really only one issue I have with this forum, and that is the number of spam membership registrations I get.  You would think that with the registration requirements where you have to type in those distorted letters and numbers in a picture to submit your registration that the spammers would be largely kept out.  Unfortunately that is not the case.  This forum has been running for about a year now, and I am up to a total of over 14,000 membership applications!  Obviously, the vast majority are spammers looking for a place to advertise Viagra or porn sites, or just to try to get online and harvest email addresses.   I personally look at every membership application, and usually you can pick out the spammers pretty easily, but occasionally one gets by me and then I have to delete whatever bogus messages they post  ::)  What's worse is that in many cases legitimate member applications may get inadvertently thrown out with all the spam membership applications.  Hopefully those people will email me and let me know that their membership hasn't been approved, so that I can take care of it.

Not to complain, though.  I really enjoy this site, and am looking forward to it growing in content in membership in the future.

Jay on my screen the words-
FE Power Forums > FE Power Forums > Non-FE Discussion Forum > Post reply ( Re: Jay what's your thoughts on this site? )
that are above the Author in the upper left hand corner on my screen are black as are the background. Also Pages: [1] is black on black.  I looked but is there a place in my profile that I can change the screen color?
I can barely see it, and when I turn up the contrast, brightness on my screen it helps a little but then blinds me.
Any way to change it from black on black? Thanks.

Mine is black on gray; not real clear, but definitely readable.  I'm not sure if there is a place to change that in your user settings or not.  I will look into that...

it turns red, but pages (1) does not.
Maybe my superman powers are coming back!  :o ;D :o

And I do like this site also!  :)

Jay, can you set it up to ask applicants a test question? Like what is an FE? If they answer properly, they get into your inbox for approval, if not they go right into the trash without you ever seeing them.  ???

^^^^ Was thinking the same thing that Joel mentioned. Ask a FE specific question most people would know. I joined a few sites like that where they ask related Q's to register.

Unfortunately the Simple Machines Forum doesn't give me the option of presenting a registering member with a question.  That would obviously help quite a bit.  I am actually back a few versions on the software for this forum, and maybe that feature is available on a newer version.  I need to upgrade in the next few weeks, so we will see...

Back a few versions? Well, this site to the Network 54 FE forum is like comparing an FE to a Briggs and Stratton.

Decline or not in the other forum, the format here is much better. Network54 is so 1996.

I lightened up the background color a little bit; hopefully this will make some of the text easier to read.

On my screen it's much lighter now.
I enjoy this format.

I never noticed any problem with the gray/black but since this brought it to my attention, I can say that it's perfectly legible.

Although this forum and the 54 version are definitely allied, neither would completely take the place of the other. In particular the cutting-edge technology found here is worth its weight in gold.
