Over torqued Eagle rod bolts question.
« on: March 01, 2024, 01:00:20 PM »
I was checking the bearings on my BBF and I couldn't remember for sure what the torque was so I looked up the ARP bolt spec and it said 80 Ft lbs. That didn't sound right but I went ahead and torqued it to that spec and put the pan back on. However, the more I thought about it the more that didn't sound right. So I got on Eagle's  website and looked up the rod with the ARP bolt I am using and it said 63 ft. lbs. which was more in line with what I was thinking. So I pulled the pan off and retorqued them to that spec. I then remembered my machine shop added torque specs on their labor bill data sheet and I checked there it also said 63 ft lbs. I guess my question is would that hurt anything? I can't see that it would but I don't know either. Thanks.

Bolts work off of stretch and they all have a specified window that they need to be ran in.  For an ARP 8740 bolt, 64lb-ft gets them to the specific stretch window they need to be in.  I've never torqued an 8740 bolt to 80 lb-ft, so I don't know what it would do, but if it were me, I'd replace them all.  If you have put them all into some degree of plastic deformation, they are pretty much time bombs.

That’s what I was afraid of. I guess I’ll get ahold of my machine shop and see if they think the big ends will need resized. Ugh.  Thanks, Bret.

They will not need resized, but I would change the bolts.  All-in-all, not an expensive fix.
