You want a GL4 grade gear oil, NOT GL5, which is designed for modern, non brass ringed syncros. I am using the Brad Penn GL4 gear oil in my Toploader, works great.

You want to make sure you get a GL-4 gear oil. I like PennGrade from Summit for $9 a quart but others are as good.

Rory we must have been typing at the same time lol.

Odd how this subject popped up, as I've been researching this as well for a couple of days. The GL-4 is what many recommend, but I see many, many using GL-5 and not reporting problems after running for years. However, I do prefer to err on the side of caution, but GL-4 does not appear to be as readily available. Additionally, I've found that Sprawl-mart 80W90 has the following printed on it "The heavy duty extreme pressure formulation protects against rust, foam, high temperature, and corrosion of copper or bronze bushings".

I've read that some recent formulations of GL-5 have addressed the yellow metals problem, but Sprawl-mart is the only GL-5 label I've found that alludes to yellow metal compatibility. Regardless, it still states to be used where GL-5 is recommended (legally covering their ass). Also, would like to know who manufactures and bottles Sprawl-mart oils (still don't know); NAPA oil is Valvoline.

Had this in my 3.03 for years, when I refresh clutch, will use again

You could break in trans with the above, drain and replace with Brad Penn perhaps ...

NAPA sells the CRC, and cheaper than Cramuson. I know we each have our preferences, but I refuse to do business with Cramuson for many reasons.

GL4 ONLY . for GL5 to address yellow metal destruction , the formulation/spec would have to change and it would no longer be GL5 spec!

Ricky.

I thought the "cramuson" moniker fitting. I did business there many, many (and I mean many) years ago; I saw where their business practices were going and decided I'd not spend another dime with them, and I encourage others to do the same.

I wish GL4 was on parts store shelves as readily as GL5. GL4 appears to be something that must be ordered in at most places.

Summit and Amazon have Joe Gibbs Driven Oil. Use it in my TLs.
The thing that concerns me about a GL-5 product that considers yellow metals is that the GL-5 focus is on newer transmissions needs. I would not try it. JMHO

The GL-5 oil is too slippery and doesn't allow the syncros to match speed of the 2 gears thus beating the brass rings to death.
