FE Technical Forum / Re: Edlebrock 7505 Air Gap

If you are willing to go way out in the weeds you can run dual IMPCO 250 propane mixers on holley baseplates directly on any edlebrock dual quad manifold. Propane is around 112 octane and the mixers like to run below 3 inches of vacume across the venturis. Lets you run a real wild engine with good street manners. Tanks and convienient filling are another matter however.

Just be aware that propane has a lot less energy than gasoline.  To get good power from it, the engine will have to be turbocharged/supercharged, etc.  Back in the 1980's, a friend's family was in the natural gas business, and ran all of his vehicles off propane.  There was a switch inside the cam you could slide between gasoline and propane.  When on propane, they had a LOT less power.  It has high octane, but unless you can blow a lot extra into the engine, it will be down on power compared to gasoline.

Good Luck!

FE Technical Forum / Re: LeMans rod bolts
« on: March 31, 2018, 07:05:13 PM »
I've dealt with LeMans rods.  Went to great lengths to have a good set.  The main thing with those, is the hollow dowels.  The caps are located not by the bolt, but by the fit between the dowels and registers.

The dowels/registers wear, and the cap alignment suffers.  You can assemble them for the rod machine, do the sizing, and they look great.  Then, take them apart/re-assemble...  and they are out of whack.  Unless they are almost New Old Stock, they are VERY dangerous to work with!  I managed to get some oversize dowels.  Someone had custom made them.  I'd recommend AT LEAST taking them all apart and re-assembling to see if they change...  and strongly consider a different rod.

Good Luck!

This is the best starter I've ever found...  Plus, the solenoid can be clocked/rotated around to any position to keep it away from heat, and for optimum clearance.  Highly recommended!

FE Technical Forum / Re: My 431 stroker Build and Dyno

I also have to question some power numbers that I have seen, especially in the big California car magazines. One magazine article I recall was they took a 100,000 miles, bone stock junkyard 5.0 Mustang, engine ,and untouched from the wrecking yard, it made more power than my Stock Eliminator 5.0 Mustangs engine did! (My Mustang ran 12.3s in legal NHRA trim,, at 3100lbs).

It seems like all the big magazines use WesTech for their dyno articles, and always get FANTASTIC results!
There is a guy on another forum that took his 363 SBF to Westech, they told him he had 575hp, and all he could do was a 10.99 @ 121.5 in a 2900lb Falcon...  when he should have been around a 10.30.  Go Figure!  Maybe there is a reason the mags flock to certain dynos!  LOL

What sort of X-Pipe is used?  Is it a name brand, or something an exhaust shop fabbed up?  Sometimes, exhaust shops will TRY to build them, and either use crush bent pipe or simply run one pipe through the other.  If they do this, the merge area is often the same as, or less than the diameter of ONE pipe.  These might sound "cool" but create a horrible restriction in the exhaust that will keep the engine from making power.

What size exhaust is on the car?  What sort of bends?  If it is crush bent pipe that's 2.5" or less, and has some tight bends...  that can keep it from making power when revved up as well.

As a test, I would uncork the exhaust, and take it for a drive.  If it runs significantly better, you've found a bottleneck.

Good Luck!

I keep thinking of Shoe and the Capsaddle...  You guys remember him?  I think it was he that came up with that...

If I can't find someone around here to do it I'll ship it to Barry and he can have Marcella or Razor do it.  I'll have to make some decisions on the rods, get some new pistons and sleeves ordered, etc.  Depending on part lead times I should be able to get this engine back together early in 2015.  When I get it back together and on the dyno I'll post the results in the technical forum.  In the meantime, now that Drag Week is over, I can get back to my endless list of other projects  ::)

Barry was referencing those guys to weld up that ROD.  The block will be too easy for those guys!   ;D

Good Luck, and I'm glad it's not nearly as bad as it could have been!  I guess you'll be getting the rods checked for cracks whenever the engine is down from now on?

It's so odd that you got a flawed rod like that from Crower.  I guess when you're pushing parts like that, flaws that would go unnoticed by lesser engines, make themselves known when you're pushing almost 1000hp at close to 8k rpm.

I admire your positive attitude!  That, and your energy can be contagious!
