One can never have too much FE stuff even if it's just sitting in the corner.

Thanks for the all the information. After reading everything I realized I didn't give all the correct information about this. I picked this car up last spring and it's turned out to be just a bit better than a running basket case. Here's what the PO said he did. He started with a D3TE 391 truck block had it bored to 4.130, found a set of used 406 pistons and a 390 crank and rods. Didn't balance anything. Doesn't run bad after I got the carbs straightened out and it doesn't overheat here in Az. but knew I wouldn't be happy until I went through it and "made it mine". Not that many miles on it since his rebuild so when I found the 406 pistons for a good price I thought I would go through it again & fix some things. While the original pistons are flattop the Egge ones are dished. Theres a small difference in the pin height that's why I asked about decking the block. Does the 391 block change anything? The reason I asked about the EDC heads was because there's a pair on eBay now for 100$. Figured if they were a better choice I'd pick them up, but I think I'll stay with what I've got. Sorry about the curve ball.

FE Technical Forum / 406 build
« on: December 07, 2016, 09:12:40 AM »
A few questions. I'm gathering parts to build my 406 3/2v 4sp 61 Starliner. Not building a monster 1/4 mile engine just something that runs good. Trying to stay mostly with stock parts. Thinking of going with a C3AZ-AA camshaft. Picked up a set of Egge pistons for it and wondered how much I could machine the deck to achieve the best piston deck height. Don't have it apart yet so I can't check what it would be with the new pistons. Currently have C2SZ-C heads. Would it be worth the expense to find a set of the EDC heads with the machined combustion chambers. Finally the web site Ford-Y-Block.com lists all the block and cylinder head casting numbers, what years they fit and dimensions for all the yblock engines.  Is a site like that out there for FE engines. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: Way OT engine question about 335 M engines.

I built a 351M using a 400 crankshaft, with ported set of 2V heads, Holley Street Dominator intake with mild gasket match, Holley 600, headers, and good dual exhaust with crossover pipe, Comp Cams H268 camshaft with matching springs, etc., hardened pushrods, guide plates, roller rocker arms with rocker arm bosses milled for screw in studs, and I was able to tow a 6000# trailer with my '78 all over the USA.  Would rev past 6000 rpm with ease, but not much to be gained by doing so.  Very strong and took the abuse of two sons finishing high school as a daily driver.  Had 4 speed OD manual transmission that was supposedly junk, but lived quite well as a tow transmission, and daily driver.  Joe-JDC
Built a 400 out of my 351m for my 79 Ranchero and it turned out real good. I mostly use it to haul water (live in the desert) so it's mostly stock w/a 2v carb. Balanced the whole thing and advanced the cam 2*. Runs great and at 40mph it's about the smoothest engine I've ever built.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Mystery oil consumption
« on: October 30, 2016, 07:23:12 AM »
I went through my 79 Ranchero 351m a couple years ago and ended up with about the same oil consumption you have. Had it bored .030 over, 400 crank & pistons and had the heads gone through. Used oil right from the start. Finally got around to checking it a few weeks ago. No leaks. Wet and dry compression test were good. After scratching my head for a bit I decided to replace the valve seals. The shop put the plastic valve seals on, so I replace them with a set of rubber seals I had laying around. Hasn't used a drop of oil since.

Just saw that video over on the ranchero.us site. Some of the bozo's over there trashed the FE. A few of us set them straight.

New guy, Dan here. Just found this site and it looks pretty good. Lived & worked in Detroit area all my life until a few years ago when I moved to Arizona. Got tried of the snow & cold. Worked 40+yrs as Ford dealer mechanic and "cut my teeth" on yblock and FE engines. Although I've worked on these engines all those years and know them inside & out,I'm always amazed at the knowledge some of the people have on both engines and cars. Never had the time to study them the way some guys have because things would change so quickly. Ya had to keep up. Started out fixing cars with points, carbs and generators and ended up fixing computer controlled ignition, fuel injection and cars with multiple computers to make things go. Currently have 2 cars I'm playing with. One a 57 Ford w/292, 3x2's & a 5sp. Just "rescued" a 61 Starliner I'm trying to return to a more stock condition. Supposed to have a 406 in it, 3x2's & a toploader 4sp. More on the 406 later. Would like some opinions on it. Anyway, don't know how much help I can add but I'll chime in when I can.
