It's easy enough to make a half inch square to half inch square adapter and test click-style, digital, and dial-reading wrenches against a beam-type.

Hey, I never thought of that.  I bet I could find a 12 point socket that would fit a 1/2" square so I wouldn't have to make anything.  And I do have a beam-type wrench (somewhere).

I like my old 1/2" drive ratcheting click style Craftsman.  Goes from 20 ft. lbs. to (I think) 150.  You have to remember to reset it back to 20 before storage.  I always have, so hopefully it's still pretty accurate.  If I need to use 3/8" sockets, I just use an adapter.

A bunch of us were talking about American Graffiti the day after it was shown on TV for the first time, before class.  A friend of mine, laid back and a bit of a stoner said, "Man, a deuce coupe and a '55 Chevy drag racing at dawn!  I was just born too late!"  At the time, anyway, I had to agree with him.  :)

I use a hoist as well.  If for no other reason than to be able to lower the new intake down without sealer for a test fit, move the hoist around until I can raise and lower it straight up and down, then raise it, put sealer on the gaskets, reinstall and then drop straight down.

A tip I learned awhile back on the water pump hose:  For removal, just cut it and forget it (pretty obvious).  On installation, leave it off until the intake is installed, then measure and cut a short piece, bend it into a U and work it on.  You wouldn't think there would be enough room but there is.  If not (I haven't encountered this but I have limited experience), I'd just trim a bit off one or the other of the tubes.

You guys are probably aware of this, but one way to get small wire is to take regular multi-strand speaker/power cord wire, strip the insulation, and just unwrap individual strands.  As always, use at your own risk.  Not sure if this technique makes the wires more brittle or prone to breaking.

The compression test could be done with the intake still off, right?  Just put the pushrods and rockers back on and take the plugs out?

Maybe the employees returning from lunch did not want to deal with a customer right now so they sent me away.

This was the first thing that came to my mind when I read your initial post, lazy employees.  Your planned call to the owner sounds like a good next step.

What Jay said.  Look at the vented gas cap closely.  Is it possible to modify it a bit, like removing or shortening the spring, or maybe removing the gasket?  Worst case, you could drill a 1/16" or 1/8" hole clear through it.

People have mentioned a shop rag in the tank getting sucked into the outlet randomly.  Any way you can see in there with a cheap HF borescope?  Probably easier to see with the fuel level low.

"Only 2 left in stock - order soon"

It reminded me of this cheaper option I had as a tiny child:

How is your battery and alternator?  Was wondering if the added electrical draw of the headlights is reducing power to the ECM or ignition.

Also the XL door panels are fancier.

I was looking at that site too.  The "body" code and the 3rd and 4th digits of the VIN indicate whether it's an XL.  Both should "match" each other, though different codes are used in the two locations so it's the meaning of the codes that should match, not the literal codes if that makes sense.  Also compare the door tag VIN to the one on the passenger side cowl under the hood to make sure they match each other.  Not having the external XL spear trim seems suspicious.
