I think this is first I've been here in about 5 years!!  Life, work, health conspires against you sometimes.  :o

Looking at doing a stroked 351C (3.75" crank; 6.00" rods) for my pickup and am curious about what you all think about the aluminum "2V/4V" heads, primarily Trick Flow and Edelbrock, that are out there.

Thanks!!

They'll have a class of their own, since the Bowtie guys cry too much when they get stomped, I guess...  :'(

And they kicked Kaase's Y-block monster out of the Vintage class..   ???

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Is There a Good Surge Protector Out There?
« on: September 09, 2015, 04:11:21 PM »
Our place in Myrtle Beach is constantly having problems with lightning strikes damaging expensive electronic equipment.  One of the electricians down there said that area is second only to Florida in lighting strikes, and I believe him!!  :'(

The wife just flew down for a few days, and, so far, she's found: one A/C control board ($400); 2 flat screen TV's ($700/ea); 1 PC ($900) and a specialized Allworx multi-line business phone ($200), plus assorted tripped GFCI's.  I'll never be able to afford all my automotive projects at this rate..  :(

I'm looking at a whole-house system, but, in the meantime, any advice on which of the small individual models actually work?  The wife's PC was on an APC surge protector, but the surge may have come through the 'net feed.  My PC, 3 feet away from hers in our office, on a similar APC, had no problems.

At one website, they say "buy Brand X surge protectors, they're the best", and, at the same site, another guy says "Brand X is the worst..".   ???

Thanks.

FE Technical Forum / Which bolt holes to use when hoisting the engine
« on: August 31, 2015, 09:39:09 PM »
As my F100 renovation continues at a glacial pace  :'( it's finally time to put the engine/C-6 tranny back in.  We've done numerous FE's over the years, and we usually used a hole in the front of one head and rear of the other, with another attachment in one of the exhaust manifold holes in each side.  But, those were iron headed FE's, this one has Ed's.  Aluminum intake and water pump, too.
As noted, we'll be installing it with the tranny attached, so, there will be some weight.
My brother and I were looking it over tonight, and scratching our heads
Any input is welcome.
Thanks in advance!!

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Vehicle Purchase Dilemma..
« on: July 24, 2015, 12:44:35 PM »
I'm looking at (both roughly the same price):

2012 Expedition XLT; 4WD; 21K miles; one owner with maintenance records.

or

2014 Expedition XLT; 2WD (it'll be kept in the south, so 2WD is fine); 35K miles; the dealer purchased it at auction - was a rental vehicle; no maintenance records, but I guess the rental guys do SOME maintenance on them.  That's a lot of miles in 1.5 years, but at least nothing should be dry-rotted or anything from sitting too much!!  It has some factory warranty left, and I can always go for an extended warranty.  I usually go for the newer vehicle, but who knows what the various rental drivers did to it.  :(

It'll see maybe 1,500 or 2,000 miles annually.

I'm in a real quandary here,  :-\ so I figured I'd get some thoughts/opinions.

Thanks!!

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Can't Post Photos..
« on: February 16, 2015, 03:08:55 PM »
I'm trying to post additional pics in my '76 F100 build thread, but, for some reason, they're not showing up.

PB lists "Email & IM", "Direct" (which is what I used before, and they always appeared), "HTML" and "IMG" to use for links to the pics, but none of them seem to work.

Any help is greatly appreciated..  ;D

My boss says I'm an analog person in a digital world...  :(

FE Technical Forum / 390 Dyno Run
« on: October 15, 2014, 02:27:18 PM »
Got the results from the 390 dyno run today!! ;D
I've discussed the build in various posts (.030 over 390; 10/1; Ed. ..69's; port matched to plenum modded Streetmaster; 750 Quickfuel; Comp 282S at 104 c/l; Faron'ized Duraspark with MSD Streetfire - it was run with MSD 6AL on the dyno).

I couldn't figure out how to fit it all on one pic, so I stuck 2 in here.

Their A/F sensor must have been on the fritz or something.

Dunno if the EGT on #7 is an anomaly, or if that's common.

Anyway, what do you all think?

Jay - I posted this over in the "Member Projects" section, too - if that's sucking up too much bandwidth, please delete the one over there.   :-\

FE Technical Forum / Now it's a torque converter question
« on: September 11, 2014, 10:08:14 PM »
Eventually I'll get this figured out!!  :D

Now I need opinions on a TQ.
I'm sure everyone's tired of seeing the specs, but, here they are again:
'76 F100 Shortbed; 3500 lbs (weighed on 2 different certified scales +/- 25 lbs); .030 over 390; 10/1; Ed. ..69's; port matched to plenum modded Streetmaster; 750 Quickfuel; Comp 282S at 104 c/l; Faron'ized Duraspark with MSD Streetfire; 1-3/4" headers; 2-1/2" dual exhaust; 31" tires; 3.89 (maybe 4.11's, after reading Paulie's response in my 'which cam' thread) gears; C-6 (don't know the ratios, but I'm guessing they're whatever would have come stock in a '76 F100).
Truck will be used for cruising locally, shows, etc..
Vacillating between a 2,500 and 3,000 RPM Hughes.
Thanks,

FE Technical Forum / C-6 Tranny Kit
« on: September 04, 2014, 11:25:53 PM »
Looking for a rebuild kit for my C-6.  Nothing racy, just a heavy-duty "RV" type setup, but I'm having a problem finding much to pick from for anything except C-6's used behind small blocks or 335/385 engines.
Ideas?
Thanks,

FE Technical Forum / Another "Which Cam" Thread
« on: September 01, 2014, 10:42:34 PM »
Woo-hoo!!  Another cam-choice thread!!   ;D

I'm still dithering on the cam choice for my 390 build.  To reiterate, it's a 0.030 over 390, Probe flat-tops; Ed #60069 heads (10.25/1); port-matched to a Streetmaster with the plenum mod; 750 QuickFuel 'Slayer'; POP adjustable rockers; Duraspark distributor that Faron's re-worked; MSD streetfire box; C-6 with 2500 or 3000 (depending on which cam I end up with) TQ; 3.89/1 gears; 31x12.50-15's; in a 3,500# F100 shortbed (currently in a state of disassembly - http://fepower.net/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=2151.0 ); it has power brakes, but I can use a vacuum pump if I need it; for shows/cruising.

I'm going to use a mechanical cam, and I'd like something with some nastiness at idle, while still being decently streetable.  Neither 1/4 mile performance nor MPG is a concern, but something that sounds nasty is.  I'm 60, and should know better, but..   ::)

I already have a Comp 282S, but am wondering if it's going to be TOO much nastiness.  Mebbe keep it and advance it a couple degrees?

Alternatives I'm kicking around:
Comp 270S    270 270 224 224 .540 .540 110° .022 .022; 1800-5800  (they say "mild rough idle", but how mild is it?)
Howards 252342-10 - 265 265 230 230 .560 .560 110 106 .022 .022; 1800-5800
Lunati 30330511 .569"/.580" 238/248 272/282 112/106 .022"/.022"; 2000-6400

Reason for the dithering?  I have another custom pickup, an '83 F150 stepside shortbed, with a super-trick 347 that has a pretty nasty Crower hydraulic roller (specs are only 222/226; .540/.555; 108, but it idles like a funny car - so much for thinking we can look at cam numbers and know how it'll act..), and, while it certainly turns heads, it's a bit too much, so I'm thinking I should go a trifle more conservative this time...   ;)

Thanks!!

FE Technical Forum / C-6 Dowel - Crack
« on: September 01, 2014, 08:52:29 PM »

Hopefully you can see the crack at the dowel in my C-6 bellhousing.  Is it ruined?  Fixable?

I THOUGHT I had the camera set to 'macro', but I guess I didn't.   :-\

Member Projects / '76 F100 Build
« on: August 27, 2014, 10:40:43 PM »
Looking at TimeWarpF100's build got me to thinking I should post up some of my '76 F100 shortbed, so, here goes.
Current engine is being done by Rhodes Performance in Somerset, PA (0.030 over 390 with Ed heads, Probe 10.5's, Comp 282S, modded Streetmaster, 750 QuickFuel "Slayer", a , "Faron'ized" Duraspark, MSD Streetfire), etc..
Future plan (wishing..  ::)  ) is for an aluminum (BBM) 482.  We'll see.

Anyway - here's how it started.  Picked it up in Raleigh, NC last May for $5K.

While I was on vacation a few weeks ago, my brother e-mailed me this pic:  and said "hey, we got started on your truck.   :o

Since we're already into it, I figured we'd better get going.

So:
 (that's my brother's '53 in the background - supercharged 351C, flip front-end, etc..).

The bed's gone:

It's in decent shape - needs a bit of work around the wheelwells and tailgate posts.

There's some rust on the floorpans, but we have new ones:

As of 8-27-14:

More to come as we progress.

FE Technical Forum / Which Carb
« on: July 25, 2014, 12:35:24 PM »
Still narrowing things down!!
Here's the setup:
76 F100 2wd shortbed – 3,500# with me in it; 0.030” over 390; Ed heads – 10.2’ish; Streetmaster;  Comp 282S; 1.75” primary headers; 3” collectors; 2.5” exhaust; C-6; 3,000 stall; 3.89 gears; 31” tires; Faron's Duraspark distributor & MSD Streetfire; strictly for cruising - I doubt it will see 500 miles/year.
Wondering which carb y'all would recommend?
I was thinking a Quickfuel "Super Street" 680 or 750 with downleg boosters and vacuum secondaries, or ????
Thanks.

FE Technical Forum / Rocker Arm/Shaft Quandary
« on: July 15, 2014, 01:54:10 PM »
Still trying to come up with adjustable rocker arms/shafts.
Ken at Oregon Cams has a good setup at a decent price (relatively speaking), but a month or so out, waiting on rockers;
Doug at P.O.P. has them, good price (relatively speaking..) but waiting a couple weeks for the shafts.
I can get Comp's kit right now.
From many years in the construction industry, I always worry when someone is 'waiting for something', because it often turns into a lot longer wait.. :(
What to do???  :-\
In case it matters, cam is Comp 282S...
