Title: Anti-ballooning plate?
Post by: plovett on May 01, 2020, 03:01:38 PM
Would you get an anti-ballooning plate on a torque convertor for a naturally aspirated 470 inch FE making about 570 ft/lbs of torque? The anti-ballooning plates are usually used on nitrous or blower cars, I think?

thanks,

paulie

570 ft lbs is the equivalent of a small block with nitrous or blower :) just saying . seriously you need it

Had the same concerns with an increase of 150 FPT in my street engine.

I think it also depends on if its a "foot brake" car, or will be launched at WOT with a transbrake. Either way, I see no downside to a torque convertor with an anti balloon plate, other than that means there is an automatic transmission in the car!

Yeah, foot brake.  Just don't want it if it isn't necessary.  The extra cost is almost nothing.

Good video.  I think Hughes is usually considered a lower end converter manufacturer, or at least is known more for that.  That video made rethink that.  Thanks.

The way I look at it, an anti-balloon plate can save your mill (#3 main bearing) and your tranny. It's ugly in a C6. The gear that the torque converter hub engages with becomes a hole saw and cuts it's way out the back side of the pump. Fills the whole C6 with iron.
