« on: May 25, 2020, 01:19:37 AM »
Does anyone have experience powder coating magnesium wheels that already have a Dow-7 coating on them.
Does it work? Any potential problems?

Read this and it may help you make your choice.
Magnesium is very galvanic and WILL have corrosion issues if not coated.
The DOW-7 coating is a chemical reaction that alters the surface of the Magnesuim in the process...It is not like paint that adheres to the surface because it alters the surface.

If your current DOW-7 coating is in good condition it will also make an excellent paint base.

The thing I don't know about is the heat tolerance of the DOW-7 process.
If you can find info telling you it will tolerate the heat required for the Powder Coat process I would guess it will work quite well.
Try calling the people in the link to see if they can tell you what you need to know.

If you are trying to make the wheels look good then you can use a product called Steelit. The off roaders use it on all their suspension. A great protective coating but only comes in black and stainless.

Having experience with steelit, the spray bombs come out very heavy, and the stuff in cans is tough to get to lay well. It orange peels pretty bad very easily as well. We use it on all our large cabinets for our machines at work.

Depending on cost of shipping, or if you can find a local company that can anodize magnesium, that would be my choice.
