Streetmaster and Edelbrock heads port match?
« on: June 07, 2014, 04:22:22 PM »
How does the Streetmaster intake and Edelbrock heads ports match up together?
Does any work have to be done or are they basically bolt on ready?
Anyone run this combination out there?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

The newer Edelbrock heads have a port nearly identical with the MR head, and a Fel Pro 1247S3 fits quite well.  The Streetmaster is a lot smaller, and needs to be port matched about 3/4" into the ports to work well.  Do the sides and top, and don't worry about the bottom, and it will have decent velocity and good torque.  Joe-JDC.

+1 on what Joe said; port match the intake to the heads and you'll be in good shape.

Thanks for the info Joe. I have the heads over at the engine shop right now.
I purchased then from a guy who ran them for a very short time and then removed them to go back to his stock heads.
They are basically in new condition, stock assembled, the packing slip on the box said they were purchased in 2003.
Would this be considered newer version or older version?
I did notice that the heads had oil restriction done to them already. Not sure if they came like that from edelbrock or the previous fellow had it done.

How much of a mis match are we talking in the Streeetmaster ports to the edelbrock ports? .250 of an inch or so?

Thanks for the help
Jared

Quarter of an inch is probably about right.  Most of the mismatch is on the sides, if I recall correctly.  Port matching the roof and the sides of the ports is the most important, the floor not so much...

Thanks for the quick reply Jay.
If you don't mind me asking.
How much HP and torque would the difference be between port matching and stock streetmaster to Ed heads from your experience?
I am putting thus combo on a 432 Stroker.
As far as opening up the carb plenum, those results will show more on mid to top end rpm as opposed to low end torque. Or am I wrong and it will also help at low rpm as well.

Sorry to be a bother, still learning the ropes as this is my first FE engine.

Thanks again
Jared.

As it turns out, I ran that exact test on my 410 HP 428CJ engine for my book.  Below 3500 RPM there was no difference, but above that speed the port matched manifold pulled away, peaking at around 10-15 HP more than the as-cast manifold.  On my 500 HP 390 stroker engine the difference was even bigger, and was apparent across the entire RPM range.  The graphs are on page 217 of my book if you happen to have a copy.  I'm guessing that your HP level will be somewhere between the two test engines I ran, so you will definitely see an improvement doing the port match.

I just finished doing a mild  port job on the Streetmaster. I took approx. 1/8th" off the sides and top and tapered it back  into the port
The plenum I took out the corners and smoothed it out. I hope it helps.

Which of the two helps the most?
opening up the plenum ( help above 4000 rpm im guessing)  or port matching the intake ports?

Either way I hope it helps get me a little more horsepower and torque.

Thanks for the advice Joe and Jay

I was amazed at how well the ports on the performer rpm ports lined up with the ED gaskets. Like right on, no trimming or matching needed.
