O/T question for Joe Craine

Joe as your reputation for a porter has been  excellent I have a question for you about a P51 Kasse cylinder head. Have you ever ported one of these heads? I am considering buying a set for my 545.  I already have the Kasse redesigned "super cobra jet" heads that were sold before the P51 design. These with a what is called a "pocket porting job" by the gentleman that does some very good work in our area. What kind of cfm could expect from a set of these (the P51's) with a full port job? I am 74 and will not compete forever but still am able to have fun and even win sometimes. LOL. I know you do the Mummert heads for some of the Y block guys as I have always been a booster of these engines as I had a lot of fun with mine years ago. But I now seem to really like my 385 series engines for their economy of build. I also had a 390 in my fairlane but the FE's are just too expensive for me to build one with a decent block as I would never use a stock block to build the power that I am used to now. By the way my 57 that weighed over 3700 lbs went 12.09 with a 125 shot of NOS with my home built 304 Y block that I did the home porting on a set of unposted ECZ G cylinder heads. I also built the tunnel ram for it a fun job with my MIG welder. Now I have a TIG so just have to teach myself how to use that Then I can use aliminum to save a little weight 8).

If I go this route I will most likely sell them to my brother as he bracket races a 460 powered fox mustang. Or remove the iron cobrajet heads that I have on another 466 (.030) I have and use them on that. Lots of options. 8)

The Kaase heads I have worked on were great with a simple cartridge roll clean up.  If I were building another 460type engine, that would be my second choice after the Boss heads.  There are some great heads available, A460, B460, Blue thunder, Edelbrock RPM, and Kaase P51, Kaase Boss,  Motorsports CJ.  All these heads will flow big numbers with porting.  Get the matching intake manifold, and try to keep the ports a little smaller than the head, or match the heads.   Joe-JDC

There is a couple builds over on the www.429-460.com site that are pretty impressive... There's a few guys doing great things with those heads... When executed properly those heads are capable of 900-1000 hp n/a with a single dominator carb and the TFS mafia intake.. Good luck with the build

Thanks for the comeback if I go this route I will do some work on them  with my cartridge roll like you have mentioned. I just don't want to screw them up as I understand that they work very good out of the box. And I have heard horror stories about folks grinding and reshaping where they shouldn't. :o

If you simply cartridge roll the entire port and do not remove material other than a gasket match the first 1/2", then you wont mess them up.  I like to use a 36-60grit on intake ports, and 120-180grit on the exhaust ports, and I use a 80-100-120grit in the combustion chambers.  Joe-JDC
