WTB: new 427 block
« on: June 07, 2016, 07:06:29 PM »
   Hi guys,

After looking at 7 different 427 blocks at Carlisle this past weekend, I've decided the best thing to do is buy a new 427 block.  The blocks I saw were either not drilled for hydraulic cam or already 30 over. For the sake of longevity I don't want a 30 over block with a 4.25 crank. The combination would be mild but I think there is risk with running hot in traffic or developing other problems.

A used new 427 block.  A give-up project where parts were accumulated but not used. Or, just plain new.

Am I at the end of a long line looking for this item?

I've heard there are a couple places making a cast iron 427 block. Any recommendations on one over the other?

    thanks,

Mark,
I wish you luck in finding a 427 block. Seems that "old" blocks not requiring a sleeve or two and std. bore are
getting increasingly harder to come by. Anyone fortunate enough to have anything laying around
is very reluctant to let go of it because finding a replacement is near impossible especially if you want to build
a numbers correct engine some day. By the time you get a used block ready to use you can probably pay for a new block but it will
still need about 700 plus in machine work to get it ready to run.
I recall a while back you were trying to find a complete 428 engine or a block and I assume you were never able to find one.
Seems all this old iron is becoming more scarce. Even hard to come by a good 390 block in some areas.
Robert Pond and BBM are probably the only 2 right now producing iron blocks and last I heard they are both out of stock.
Brent used a Pond block on my 511 TP and no issues with it if that helps anything.
Hopefully if you keep asking someone will be willing to turn loose of something you can use.
Good luck
PS you are not a hoarder!  ;D

Hi Gary,
Yes, I was looking for a 428. But decided it would be more fun to change a couple numbers----from 428 to 482. There have been 428s for 1500 to 2500. Add in the machine work and the numbers start creeping towards a new block that isn't on it's last breath.
The wagon is still driving around so it's no rush on finding parts to complete a waiting project.

Hoarding....eh, not sure. But, I have enough projects for more than a lifetime. So, no additional cars, just parts.

   thanks,

If you find something useable "grab it" Mark. I've been looking and anything reasonably good sells quickly. There are a few questionable blocks for sale that need work and/or are already .030 or .040 over. Right now there is nothing "new" in cast iron available, all on back order. This will hopefully change soon for the BBM blocks.

Call Doug @ BBM.  Talked to him last week and he had a used/new block that has selling at a discount.

As for a .030" factory block, it's not the overbore that would cause one to run hot.

The used/new block is just what I am looking for. Unfortunately, it has already sold.  Doug did mention he has a mock-up block that he will be selling in a few weeks. I said when you're ready to let it go, give me a call. Doug sounds like a really nice guy. Thanks for the lead Brent.

Here is a block that the guy says is NOS and 1UA crank that is also supposed to be NOS. Not a bad deal if everything he has is correct and truly NOS. I would ask for a few more pictures and double check the bore size. I do NOT know the seller nor do I have any affiliation with him.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/322151266906?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Thanks for the link. Despite the desire to purchase just to obtain such a great rate on shipping, I have decided to go with a new 427 block. The block is all I need since a 4.25 stroker crank is part of the combo. I'd leave this "nos" 427 for someone restoring a period correct car.
