So you're walking down the clearance aisle at Walmart. You spy a stack o' Compies with the above numbers at a killer price. You'd like to buy them all, but you just blew your paycheck buying brownies from the Rasta mon in the parking lot. Only gots moolah for one. Outside, where Rasta has picked your trunk lock and is dealing out of it, is the rarest production factory Cobra Jet car this and other forums have never actually seen. With a near-stock CJ and headers, how do you pick a cam for spirited street driving? What would change in the application to change the decision? Is the inside joke at Comp that they are all the same cam with different part numbers on the boxes? Will Rasta mon get busted and the police tow away your Jet? I gotsta know.

Well, I'd leave the 275DEH on the shelf, a ton of split and a snoozy intake lobe, unless you are running a C-6 and a 3.00 or 3.50. I think it'd be good for a stock replacement in a iron manifold car
Of the two remaining hydraulic cams, they really act similar in a 428, and are a bit more rowdy although the XE should hang in a little longer and have a little more chop at idle. I'd pick either if headers and good exhaust
The 282S is likely about the same as the 2 big hyd cams too, but despite having less lobe, might hang in longer due to the lifter design. The tough part is you have to buy more parts to make it work. I am a solid-lifter kind of guy, but nowadays have warmed to a set of Crower camsavers, good springs and stock style rockers at that level of performance. Depends what you want.
Saying they are all the same, except the 275DEH, probably isn't that far from the truth

Thanks, Ross. I don't have a DEH, but I have the other three. If this winds up as a "boulevard" car, then I might do the solid stick (not sure what extra parts you are talking about) and dual quads, as there are weekly cruise-ins around me. Otherwise, maybe a Sidewinder and the XE. Well see.

I have a 282S in the galaxie and i think its kind of beige
I ordered a 294S but got a 282 Idles smooth At 650 pulls
from idle, Ported C4-G heads,10.6-1 comp, streetmaster, 870 Holley VS
short castiron headers Cruice-o-Matic with built converter
don't remember stalspeed 2.82 and 255 75 15
10.6 -1 comp sensitive to where i fill up 98 so i going for the 294S
as i planed from beginning

OK, Heo, you got me. Beige is a color; does that mean it's kind of bland? Help me out.

I've listened to a lot of cam sound videos on YouTube. I'm looking for a steady choppy idle. Years ago a guy posted an uncorked F100 410 with a 280H. I still keep this video on my computer's desktop because I think it is the perfect boulevard sound. I have heard 282S cams that sound very similar. I am aware that H and X pipes drastically reduce choppiness. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dczh02svKVI
My CJ has original pistons, so my compression is also a "theoretical" 10.6. The highest pump gas here in Az is 91. I understand that you rate your octane differently. I am hoping that 91 plays nice with 280ยบ-ish cams. I have heard 294S cams. I think they cross the line into "racy", uneven idles, which I am not crazy about for the street. At .600" lift, I don't know if I would put one in without measuring piston-to-valve clearance. I have almost no experience with cams that size.

You know Beige is a colour but ...not often you hear some one say
OHH My that's a beautiful beige. :D Like the fourdoor sedan among
collours, kind of tame/bland yes
Mine idles alot smother than that with exhaust system, you hear its
a performance cam but a lot smother, always start on second compression
I have a video
of it on the teststand with open headers on my phone but don't know
how to upload it here
I dont know if Thats what smothed out my idle but zero decked .040
head gasket, the head guy worked over the cambers some and CC matched them
Yes there is this RON and MON octane numbers and i think we have a mix
of both so our 98 is like your 91 Ive been told
I have the Video in the mail also so i can mail it to you or if someone tell how
to post it here

I meant extra parts if you had a stock CJ, you'd have to buy rockers and pushrods to run the solid cam. The 282S will be slightly milder, but you can get some back by closing up the lash.

Over here we use "vanilla" to describe something plain or bland. So, I was thinking your "beige" was like our "vanilla", since you think your 282S is not tough enough.

It appears you figured it all out!

Sounds great! Nice throttle response, too. I think once in the car, the sound out of the tail pipes will be pretty good. But, hey, if you want the 294, go for it!

Here's one I just did, 400 Poncho, Brent had the cam ground for me. Basically a 280H. Has a 279 Thumpr intake, 280 Magnum exhaust, 109 LSA, on 107. Low lift for a stock Poncho
Its a 67 GTO, 10.5:1 400 +.030, all stock, iron intake, recurved HEI, Q-jet, and Doug's full length headers with resto stock exhaust.

How much on the lash? The person I bought the car from thinks there are adjustables already there, but I haven't yet pulled the covers too see. Doesn't matter; I have a pile otherwise, including some Iskys and Cranes. Also have lots of dumbbells and shells and corresponding p-rods.

Interesting mix of profiles. Sounds good also. Was the exhaust tubing size bumped over stock?

You can go real tight on a naturally aspirated car, as long as the valves close hot and cold, you just can't go too loose. Diesels and turbos working for living you need to make sure you give the valve a little time to cool, but that is as much a function of duration of the lobe as it is lash
For example, I run my Erson in the Mustang at .014 they spec it for .028, the Bullet in my truck, I ran at .016, and they spec'd it at .026.
The Poncho was a unique one, knew very little about the internals and by the time I picked the lobes, it could have been just as easy to buy a 280H and retard it a little.
Regardless, the car has real resto pea shooter exhaust, but we replaced a bad cam, one lobe was bad, but it also was a crappy Crane with a wide LSA and no duration. The car is night and day difference, he is on a "3 young kids" budget, so next step is 3 inch mandrel bent with an H or X, and the next after that is a Performer RPM. Both should likely make a noticeable difference

Jusss peachy. First Dan859 drops dead in the middle of the night, and now this. I expect a lawsuit tomorrow for inducing Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Its cold there so throttle response is a little better when warmed up. With the exhaust i have now in the car 2" with H-pipe, 2 big Mercedes mufflers with 45 degree turndowns it is almost to quiet,And to restrictive. Exhaust velocity is so high i get a wistling sound out of the tailpipe I'm going to upgrade to 2.5 Inch with straight through mufflers
Your longer stroke and bigger volume would smoth it out even more i think
I dont mind the smoth idle but think it lack a little ...punch.
