FE Technical Forum / Re: 390 FE Carburetor Size

So from what I'm seeing here and elsewhere most are leaning towards a 750ish cfm. I was hoping to try out the annular discharge boosters on the 650 AVS2 but looks like I'll be trying an Edelbrock 1407 750 cfm. I really like how quick and easy it is to make adjustments the Eddy. And the Performer style boosters offer pretty good throttle response.

Well there's no way I'm putting a 2 bbl on this thing lol.

The 4160 I referred to is a 0-80457SA 600 cfm vacuum secondary with no tuning other than idle mixture. It's been a great carb.

The street Avenger is great as far full throttle goes.

I've gotten the 390 pretty well dialed in as far as timing and such. I'm happy with that.

A smaller carb is gonna have better throttle response. But I don't want to give up anything at full throttle.

The Street Avenger is fine overall I guess. But I certainly don't think it's the best carburetor on the market and I think I could have chosen better. There really isn't any drivability issues per say. The big Street Avenger is also a very thirsty carb. If a 650 cfm will do the job just fine on the top end and have better throttle response too and get better mpg seems like a win, win. I just wanted to hear from some folks that are running a 600ish cfm on their 390 how they felt about it.

I can only speak about my application. But the Street Avenger has terrible throttle response for me. I'm running a run of the mill 4160 on my CJ-7 and it's a way better all around carburetor than my Street Avenger

My motor-390, .030 over, flat top pistons, 9.7 compression, stock heads, Comp XE262 cam, Sanderson shorties, Eddy Performer RPM intake and Holley 770 Street Avenger.

Shortly after the first of the year I'm planning to buy a new carb. I'm itching to try one of the new Edelbrock AVS2 650 cfm carbs. But I'm concerned that it might be too small for my application.

I'd love to hear some input from those who have experience running a 600-650 cfm carb on a similar built 390.

I figure the emissions deal for sure. And ford just wasn't aggressive enough on the street by the late sixties. They seemed happy enough to play follow the leader on the street as long as they were winning on the track. But oddly, rumor is Ford was working on a tri power set up for the 429 around 1970. Using the same carbs as the Chrysler 440 six pack set up I think.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Feel a vibration from Motor. I Think

So I took the belts off this morning and sure enough no vibration. Great suggestion I would have never thought to try that. I swapped the fan clutch for an extra I had and the vibration is pretty much gone. The only thing I feel now is I believe just the exhaust pulses at a certain rpm. Before it would vibrate the steering wheel. No more. Thanks guys, I knew I came to the right place

I looked over the damper it looks fine. No sign of the rubber part separating. That's a good idea about the belts. I'm going to try that today. I thought about the converter. I sure hope it's not that.

The  390 in my 72' F100 has developed a vibration about 1600-1700 RPM. Then goes away by 1800 RPM. It's just in that couple hundred rpm. Can't feel it driving down the road. But very noticeable when parked if you idle it up or if fast idle is on. Harmonic balancer maybe?

Hmmm. Well it definately changed mine. Can't say I like it as well. But the motor definately breathes better. I also haven't noticed any spark knock since changing the intake either. It was a constant battle before.

I guess so. It was unexpected though. Another thing I've noticed. I have 40 Series Delta Flows on it. And on my CJ-7 with an AMC 360. Now the CJ is kinda loud I guess. But, whoa, that 390 is unbelievably louder than the AMC motor. But the 390 probably has twice the horsepower too lol

It's not the timing. That was my first thought too. I was wondering if no heat crossover could be it. The motor runs great. And definately pulls higher up the rpm range than before. But as soon as I fired it up I noticed it really changed the sound of the exhaust. Kind of an off idle throbbing sound. Like a blurb, lol. Almost makes me think of the way an AMC V8 sounds. I really liked the way it sounded before. Full throttle still sounds the same I think. Kinda disappointed. But as long as it runs strong

Anyone else noticed that their exhaust sounds a lot different after swapping to an Edelbrock RPM intake? I previously had a cast iron 4bbl intake.

Hmmm. I see what your saying Barry. I like the thought of saving any coin I can. Mine are sunk/beat down pretty low. I definitely only want to do it once though. I'm going to talk to another machine shop here local next week. The guy I showed them to yesterday felt they were too far gone. I dont rev past 5000 rpm much so I don't need a real aggressive head. I think going with the bigger valves and shim the springs will work fine for me
