Title: Tunnel Wedge intake, how streetable?
Post by: 677litre on May 17, 2018, 11:13:51 AM
Considering buying a BBM Tunnel Wedge intake but concerned about it's street manors.  Would be going on a 30 over 428, I haven't decided if I'm going to install a stroker kit but it might be an option.  Heads are currently a set of C6ae-Rs with 2.09 1.65 valves.  Cam will be hydraulic roller but I haven't chosen grind yet.  Car is 67 Cougar with 4 speed.  Rear gears are 2.73s (may change).  Car will be a weekend show/shine cruiser.  Would like some opinions and thoughts on combos before spending the cash. Jay thoughts??

That's a high RPM manifold, especially on a 428.  I know others might disagree, but I wouldn't consider putting one on an engine of less than 480 cubic inches.  And even then, you're giving away low and midrange torque to a good dual plane.  Your gears also aren't right for that manifold.  I think you'd be much happier with a nice medium riser 2X4 dual plane intake, if you can find one...

I agree with Jay on this one.  However, if you wanted to go single 4V, I would suggest a Performer RPM with the logos all removed, and make it look like a stock intake.  A simple clean up of the intake ports the last 1/2" will be all that is needed.  Joe-JDC

X3....completely wrong intake for that combination.

You need to focus on low end grunt with that rear gear.

x4.

I ran a Dove TW on my 428CJ but the truck has 4.56 gears and a wide ratio box.  The BBM has even bigger ports.
If you want quads, try a low riser or med riser 2x4.  It will have better low speed manners.

What's the best streetable gear you'd run?

I've been looking for a reasonably priced C7ZX-9425-A or repop of it for along time with no luck. Was hoping one of these might be streetable but it looks like a big no. :(  Any leads on a C7ZX-9425-A would be appreciated.

There's a C7ZX on epay now $625 was the bid I saw it at ( not mine).

2x4?  Have a link?  Couldn't see any when I searched.

I think 3.70s are a good compromise between performance and streetability.  Of course Ford put up to 4.30s in their performance cars of the era, but those are pretty tough to deal with at highway speeds.  Even 3.50s would be a major improvement over the gears you have now...

Here's a C7ZX-A on eBay, only $563 at the moment, looks like the exhaust crossover needs attention, but that wouldn't necessarily scare me if the price is right. Cosmetically a little rough near the casting number.

Someone needs to really do a few hundred 2x4 MR intakes.....  Seems like folks are always needing them, but BT trickles them out and originals are priced beyond what most folks can afford.

All those BT's that were on ebay went away in about a week. Think they were listed for $960

If I were to change out the gear, (I have access to 3:70s), I'm guess the intake is still not a good choice for a weekend street toy correct?    I can see why, given the design, that it would be for big cubic drag cars.

The opposite in my opinion. You don't have to take my word for it though. I'm one of those nuts that thinks mo gear is mo betta! :) If it is a weekend toy, I would not hesitate to throw some gear at it..........At least a 3.70 or a 3.89 is still "streetable", even with a mild hydraulic. I use the term streetable LOOSELY. I ran a 3.89 gear in my car with 27in tires and a mild hyd. cam that was 224/234@.050". I have a wide ratio trans, too. I saw no ill effects even when I switched to a 4.33 gear other than mileage. Smiles per gallon increased! If you're going to be cruising 65-70mph, I wouldn't  go crazy on the gear if you are running a 27-28in tire. I don't do much highway driving, so I like the gear.

Thanks, now I see it.  Looks like it's seen better days.  Too bad they only ship to the US.  I'm in Canada. :(  I could ship it to a parcel service though....

Been on Drag Week twice now with 4.30 gears, 28" tires and no overdrive. A thousand miles each week, some of it on interstates. For short highway trips, they really aren't that bad. I'll admit though, for a 200-250 mile trip, you better add some extra time to get there..lol

Corrosion on the exhaust crossover is a common issue on any of these production aluminum intakes, maybe even more on the various police intakes. It's usually not too difficult to have them welded and repaired, just need to figure that into what you pay. And the repair is generally underneath and not visible. At least on this one you know what needs to be done, it's worse when people pay top dollar and then find out later their intake needs to be fixed, the corrosion isn't always apparent and the seller doesn't always disclose the problem.

It's been ported, just FYI. Probably not a problem on your C6 heads, but just something to be aware of.

Show and shine cruiser, the eye candy might be more valuable than the loss of power on the tunnel wedge , if your not a hard core driver the Cool Factor of the t-wedge might be worth having

Just curious, is it your manifold your selling?  If so any history of it is always appreciated.

I know.  This car is turning out to be more of a big show than driver.  FYI, it's in the build stage.  Pretty rare 67 Cougar, factory sunroof, 4 speed, cruise, AC, FE car etc etc.

I'm not sure why you'd want to run an exhaust heated crossover on a 2x4 MR intake anyhow.....
Sure in the North on a daily driver, but how many folks are driving their Galaxie in 2degree weather?  (except maybe Heo)

Nope, not mine. My intake was a Tunnel Wedge, not a dual plane like in that auction. And mine is gone now.

Years ago, I chose a 3.50 for a daily gear in my 427-powered cars. With a 4 speed, facing a challenge on the street here in Metro Detroit usually meant a roll, and I had usable space at the top of first when my next-lane opponent was fighting the bottom of second.

On more than one occasion on the highway, I could nudge the other guy up to about 100 and then shift back into third gear. On the highway, 3k in fourth was about 70 so it was livable. Got 11.7 trip mileage on a jaunt to Sebring from Metro Detroit---for the 12 Hour Race---Best single tank was 16. But we were also running over 100 for an hour at a time on sections of US 75 that were finished.

I simply switched to the factory-supplied 4.11 to go to Detroit or Milan.

3.70's are my preference also. Typically found in half ton trucks with a manual 3 speed and I6 in front. Mine have found mine in 65 and 66  pickups.

I have owned my comet for 35 years and i have tried several gears out.3.25-3.50-3.70-3.89-and 4.11s thats in it now.i would have to say i liked the 3.89s better than any of the others.the 3.89s has great take off,but it still aint too low to get out on the interstate with.so i think 3.89s are hard to beat for weekend cruising with a few 1/4 mile hits here and there.my first car when i was only 12 was a 67 cougar.i would love to have a cougar with a fe in it,mine was a 289 4bbl,3 speed in the floor.
