SOHC front cover
« on: January 31, 2019, 09:27:55 AM »
Hi, I am installing My front cover and there is holes in the wrong place on the tin backing plate, on the left head one hole in .250 away from were it should be, and on the right head there is a hole that goes nowhere, my heads have been milled so some holes are off some but my intake fits nice so I am modifying the front cover to fit, they must of made a few different heads that the left head hole is off that far, but if it was easy every one be doing it. Leny, which hole is off, and whose backing plate is it?

I think it is a Ford but there is no part number on it, The center hole on the left head is to high for the plate it is not one that goes through the front cover, and the block does not have a boss for the hole in the front cover the third one from the bottom next to the alternator bolt, it just seems weird why they didn't weld a nut on the backing plate, maybe it is a aftermarket plate and what did you use for a chain adjuster bolt. Thanks Leny Mason

Leny, take a look at the front of the heads in the thread below.  If your left head has that center bottom bolt in a different location, you have a very early set of Ford heads.  I'd just modify that backing plate to fit.

Also, none of the backing plates have a nut welded on the back, you have to get the right length bolt and just slip a nut up behind the plate in that spot by the alternator bolt.

Precision Oil Pumps has a factory type chain tensioner screw, and you can also make your own by just taking a long bolt and using a die to add threads so there's a couple inches of thread on the end of the bolt.

Thanks, I got that part done like you said an early head or something, I welded a nut to the back of the plate it is just seams odd that they didn't do that instead of having to feed a nut behind it, I am making the adjuster bolt now then start putting the Chain's on I hope we can get the right advance on the right cam.
