never heard of them. what gives the 9" the strength, is the fact that the pinion is low.  In a 4wd, the front  axle pinion is high because it is set up to run backwards. A high pinion would give you more drive shaft clearance, but you wouldn't gain any more ground  clearance because of the housing. If you were to put a 4wd front diff. in the back, it's going to break at the drop of a hat. Just my thoughts on it.

So I'm slow & broke, what went wrong?

Have you tried asking Currie?  IIRC they did "flippped" 9" stuff.

I remember some aftermarket differential company who used a 9" gearset, with the front of the pinion supported, but re-arranged it in such a way as to get away from the additional drag caused by the conventional lay-out. At least that was the claim. It's been some years ago.

Raising the pinion would also hep reduce driveline angles. Truehi9 is one manufacture. Currie and others sell one as well.

Not sure why anyone would consider going this route except for off-roading. The only reason for the High 9 is for increased driveshaft clearance for rock crawling. It reduces strength of the center section and raises the driveshaft so that tunnel clearance must be dealt with, which isn't really an issue on raised 4wd applications. It has its place, but certainly not in the car world.

I have a friend that bought a centersection to his dragracing car
that had 12 Gm stuff inside with higher, pinion suposed to reduce
drag....well no doubt it do it but how much? Im sceptic that he can
feel any gain in the class he is driving. There was a lot i had put the money
in on that car to reduce drag...and wheight

I've also heard of the 9"/chevy conversion to get better gear angle and free up some rotational HP.  Super stocker kind of trick.

Agree.  I'm just not the type to worry about it.  Like I tell everyone....."I wouldn't have started with a 4600# car if I was worried about being the fastest".
