With my luck I figured what I found in the junkyard would fail on me and cost my a rebuild which would be close to what a new one would cost so I bought new.  I got everything from these guys and and a simple wiring harness to get rid of the regulator.  I talked with them on the phone and they're very nice and helpful.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Thinking about casting some valve covers...

Jay, I think your idea is great.

I still use tin "Powered By Ford" valve covers because they're not available in aluminum.  I'd pay extra to have a cast alum. set with "Powered By Ford" milled in them.

I use AutoCAD everyday if you need any help producing a drawing for the CNC mill.

FE Technical Forum / Re: More on the "small FE" idea....
« on: October 11, 2016, 01:06:02 PM »
I think it is cool that there is interest in small cube FEs.  I thought I would share a neat combo with the group.  I have two of these in-process at the moment.  One with H304P budget pistons, and one with my custom CP Bullet "390" pistons.  I used 351M-400 rods.  Strong, available, and inexpensive.  They are safe to 600 hp in past testing.  The width is very close.  The 3.5 stroke crank is turned down to 2.310, and offset ground to 3.625 stroke.  A touch-up at the cheeks for the width, and a nice radius, and really a nice combo.  It uses a 1.760 c/h 390 piston, 6.58 rod, 3.625 stroke.  380 high rpm-capable, all economy and available stuff, and it comes out 10.152 deck height.  I am working on a Small bore Pro Port head, that may end up being a small bore casting collaberation with BBM down the road, after some R&D.  I have one already with a CNC program for Super Stock 352s, but I need to adjust the flange location to a stock MR much like my "Street Pro Port".  The head will have 145 CC runners, 2.09 intake valve, and 315 cfm.  The exhaust will be the exhaust I already have with a 1.57 valve and 230 cfm capability.  Money saved on the shortblock, without having to buy " custom" pistons and costly machining of BBC rod adaptations can be spent on a killer bolt-on head for small bores.  At 2.09/1.600 valve sizes, and an efficient chamber, my plan is an affordable, killer performance, small bore head, and an economical and efficient 380-ish cube combo with parts that don't break the bank, or confuse the machinist!

The small head will also be VERY good for 4.125 and 4.250 strokers in street duty cars, trucks, and 4x4s.  Lots of FEs out there that all these big-ported cylinder heads have forgotten.  The small head will make a torque beast out of any 352/390 based engine,  strokers included.  I will post in the dyno section when these are done.  One will get a mild hydraulic roller, the other a solid roller bumpstick and 11:1.  Stay tuned!

Neat builds!  I'm anxiously awaiting the torque numbers.

I love your truck.  That is neat and a real workhorse.

Ford Truck Enthusiasts.
It's basically 20 people that are really informed on ford truck, 100 people that are slowly improving their trucks, and 10,000 high school kids that know everything.

I'm "DeepRoots" over there.

Good one, but true in my opinion.

FE Technical Forum / Re: oil filters
« on: September 20, 2016, 08:33:53 AM »
You guys are great entertainers when it comes to filters at least to retired filter peddlers like me. I've been flown to (via corp jet) and gone all through Baldwin's lube, fuel and hydraulic "filter plant". Left no doubt and they confirmed Baldwin makes the large, heavy duty and industrial filters they simply sub-out all the filters common to the automotive market (ultra competitive).
This thread starts right off searching for recommendations on a shorter spin-on filter.  You can't have your cake and eat it to.  Odds are great there will be less filter media in a shorter filter.  Unfortunately increaseing the amount of media EXPONENTIALLY and directly improves the performance of the filter in every measurable way that filters are rated.  Contamination capacity , restriction, flow:differential pressure, and surprisingly even the sizes of particles captured etc..  Conversely decreasing media does the opposite of increasing it in all aspects.
For the life of me I find it hard to comprehend why "laymen"  get into such elaborate discussions on both oil and to a lesser extent air filters while they don't even put forth a tenth of that effort discussing  gaskets, oils, carbs, headers, mufflers, tires, gears, pistons, cams etc.. I've sold over $25 million worth of filtration and get educated on filters all the time by laymen. I'm especially amused by the never ending hoards of snake-oil filter advertisers.... you know the ones that say: filters down to, filters as small as, increases HP & Fuel Mileage etc.
I was requested to do a speech for a group of ASHRAE engineers on antimicrobial treated filter medias. One engineer came up after I'd talked and said he liked my using the: "It filters down to a half-micron and so does a chain link fence if you find a half micron particle somewhere on it.'

Qikbbstang, what brand would you recommend?  I like hearing from people in the industry.  I figured filters, like most products, are manufactured by just a handful of companies and built to the label's specs.

You mentioned in your rebuild quote a "hot cam".  Be careful when building a towing engine, you don't want a "hot cam" or you'll loose low end torque.

I'm going to have my existing flexplate balanced to match the new rotating assembly.

I'm looking for a 428/410 externally balanced flexplate. I'm planning to swap a 428/410 crank into my existing 390 with an auto trans. I know they are available new but wanted to save a few bucks if someone has a usable used one lying around. I don't need high RPM ratings, this will go in a truck that's a driver/tow rig.

Thanks for sharing.

Looks really good for a truck engine.  This has me dreaming about a for rebuild on my truck's 390.

« on: October 07, 2015, 09:09:33 AM »
I'm looking for a Ford/Thompson power steering pump pulley. I need one that uses the 2nd groove on the water pump/crank pulleys. My current p.s. pulley uses the 3rd groove on my w.p./crank pulleys. I don't know the Ford part number for the one I need. I'm pretty sure these where used for Mustangs with A/C and in trucks with a single groove alternator pulley. Some of these, maybe the later version, are marked "7AA". I think it was first used in 1967. This is for my 1970 truck if it makes a difference.

If your existing radiator doesn't do the job I'd give U.S. Radiator a call.
