My Latest FE
« on: January 27, 2013, 01:28:31 AM »

Have a look at my latest FE project.  My son and I drove from Texas up to Kansas to check it out, and we ended up makin' a deal.  I drove it back home with him following me (just in case!).  As you would expect the old Gal didn't miss a beat!  We cruised at 65-70mph with no issues... The colors are original and called Peacock Blue and Corinthian White.  IMO a nice combo!  The engine is the X-code 352 2V mated with a Cruise-o-Matic.  It also has P/S, P/B, and Selectaire aircon.
The 352 is a little decrepit since it's going on 50 and is going to need some attention soon.  I'll keep y'all posted on the diagnostic results and some ideas for the future!  Bruce

Really, really nice looking car, Bruce.  You'd almost hate to mess with it, but - it needs a stroker motor  ;D

Really nice and clean ride you have there. Looking at the pic.. what is that distribution block to the right of the brake booster? Looks like air lines coming outta it, is the suspension bagged? And yes.. another vote for "stroking it" when it's time.  ;D

I got a thing for 63 galaxies... that one is really nice.  Just left a 300ft tire mark with mine  8)
Super nice that it's a Galaxie 500.... bucket seats are cool, but it's cooler to ride with your lady next to ya.

Thanks y'all for the compliments!  It's a bench seat Galaxie 500... the seats are a combination of turqoise vinyl and matching cloth, also in great shape.  The dash and door panels are turquoise. Btw the car was produced in mid-July '63 so it must have been one of the last ones off the line before the '64s started coming.

Scooter, yes it has an air bag suspension installed by the previous owner. The ride height can be lowered quite a bit from whats shown in the pictures. He said he likes 'em low!  I'm going to remove them, cause it hurts the ride and I think I can get a good stance and better handling without them.

Bags are for semi trucks, stock springs in front and some composite rears are the way to get a smooth manageable ride. Throw in some good shocks and it will ride like a new car.

questions are up
Are there someone selling stiffer swaybars

Heo, I agree with Jon Summit is a good place to look. Addco is a manufacturer of sway bars: http://www.addco.net/aftermarket/.  Also a company called Hellwig...

Don't worry about hijacking, I'm planning to do the same on my Galaxie soon. My opinion is most of the old cars can really benefit performance and safety-wise from new, larger sway bars and modern shocks.

I'll follow the hijack and recommend the crank eliminator kit as a first step on any 63/64, available from several sources, I chose Rare Parts' unit.  Consider also the roller idler arm at rareparts.com.

Mine have the police package so its handling good
for a 60s landbarge. Could need some new springs
in front and some new shocks though.
And maby could benefit from slight stiffer swaybar
in front and a rear swaybar.
But it can bee the tires that cant handle any more

This is similar to Greg Donohue's '60 to '64 Galaxie toe- in eliminator kit.....one could make this rather than buy it. And it is a great improvement in handling.

The toe-in bar that Donahue sells can cause interference issues with larger (or aftermarket) anti-roll bars.  Of course, if you ask him, there's absolutely no reason to run a larger anti-roll bar than was offered by Ford.  Here's a picture of the crank replacement kit (sorry, I used incorrect nomenclature earlier) installed on my car:

The crank eliminator (or the toe bar) keep the front bushing for the lower control arm positively located, which keeps toe and camber from changing under hard braking or cornering.

Yes my bar is fabricated from flat and angle iron
and is atatched to the frame in the midle if my
memory dont play tricks with me
The bar apears to be made by some company
due to the finish dont apears to be "home made"
and have been mounted for a long time
Maby you could buy them in the 60s from somewere
The car is very stable under hard braking
and with the right brake shoes the 3x11 drums
is very good.I havent faded them yet
With the old no name shoes they was totaly unsafe
Interesting to se the modification on your car Chad
Was there a big improvment in handling ?

As far as I know, the flat bar was offered as a dealer installed after-sale fix for instability complaints.  I have little evidence to support this claim, other than 'I've heard a lot of dudes say so'.

The overall improvement in handling for my car was nothing less than dramatic, from positively frightening to positively in control.  Of course, replacing a badly worn front suspension and adding a upgrades at the same time makes it a bit difficult to differentiate which made the most difference.  New springs (AC rate front, six leaf rear), shocks, control arm bushings, ball joints, and the crank eliminator were installed first, all at once.  Abrupt stops no longer require fighting the car to keep it from diving for the ditch or the oncoming lane of traffic.  The drag link, tie rods, and roller idler tightened up the manual steering nicely, though I still need a rag joint.  Understeer really increased with the bigger (1") front anti-roll bar, that was improved by the addition of the (7/8") rear bar later.  I still have some understeer when I'm playing around but that's arguably due to the 275 rear/215 front tires.  Body roll is minimal, ride quality was improved.

I purchased some urethane bushings for the front spring eye, but haven't installed them yet.

It looks like the bar have been instaled since the
car was new  it have 6 leave springs in the rear
It have  tractionmaster type traction bars with
Ford stamped on them so the first owner
wanted a good handling car
it is a low milage car so stearing and bushings
is thight and nice. My plan is to mount a power
stearing box from a Mercedes or a Opel Omega
they have long sector shaft as the Galaxie box
I havent found any Ford ps box with long enough
sector shaft.I know The Omega box is almost a
bolt on but i rather have a Mercedes if i can make
it fit .I have some different laying around so
i have to see if i can fit one

They should have made the rear sway bar
with more holes to mount the link for fine
tuning

I've got a complete Ford PS setup, but I think I'm going to mothball it.  Since the upgrades, steering effort has been reduced considerably, and it's plenty tight, so I think I'll just stick with what I have for now.  Have you looked at the Galaxie rack and pinion setups from Wurthit or Flaming River?

Gents, thanks for the suspension info and sources!  I've been exclusively a Fairlaner so I didn't know much about the ins and outs of the Galaxie front ends and rear suspensions for that matter. Now I'll be doing some investigating on the setup I want.  For sure I want better cornering and overall stability to handle a major future increase in FE power.

Next I'm going to post my thoughts on an FE combination and hopefully get your weigh-ins too.

I got no problem with the stearing effort but the wife dont like to paralell
park with it ::)
Yes i got the complete stock p/s with a swing-away column laying around
but i dont like the stock setup with ramtube it feels like you cut of the
stearing shaft :D
I saw a r/p set up somewere. It was a SAAB/Opel rack. Probably Pontiac
Chevy something to you in USA
I used them before easy to convert to many aplications since the
midle of the rack moves and have 2 boltholes in the midle where
i bolt a flat bar  with one conical hole in each end for the stearing joints
so its possible i use one of those i have a couple laying around

Yes the wurth-it R/P is a GM frontwheel drive rack

And sorry Bruce for taking over the tread i hope you
got some useful information :-[

I am going with a flaming river Mustang II rack, it is much improved over the original and lighter to boot. Also it uses a GM variable pump for stabilize steering and keep things cool.

Guys,
I haven't posted on my Galaxie for a few weeks as I'm getting ready to move back home to the good 'ol USA from my overseas assignment.  Not ready to tackle the engine options with y'all yet, but after hearing a few comments I think a stroker is definitely in my '63 Galaxie's future  ;D

A quick question on the front end thread above, are the crank eliminators and the toe-in bar both needed to tighten things up properly?  Or can I get away with the crank eliminators alone?  Reason I'm asking is I definitely want a larger front sway bar and don't want the toe bar to interfere...

Btw, Chad D thanks for the link to the pics on your front end work - very educational!

If you use the offset shaft eliminator kit, then no need for the stabiliser bar. You will have plenty of room for a bigger sway bar.

My Gal is in the shop now getting the front and rear suspensions rebuilt... I bought the eccentric crank eliminator kit for the lower A-arms from Rare Parts. The shop tells me my new 1" sway bar might not clear as result. Any logic to that?  Do the crank eliminators position the lower arms in the same place as the stock setup?  Thanks for advice, Bruce

I'm still using the factory sway bay with the offset shaft eliminator kit, and plenty clearance around the sway bay. The lower control arm is not that for off the original position, and definitely drives better than before.

Hi Y'all,
This probably sets the record for the longest gap between posts!
Here's a couple of photos of Blair Patrick working his magic on another 482 Sideoiler, but this one will soon go in my '63 Galaxie!  I told Blair I wanted good idle quality, good vacuum, and enough torque to make a spirited street performer.  The power steering, brakes, and A/C will be retained and the car will be used mainly for cruising and short trips here in SE Texas.  The dyno facility was at Blair's friend Jim Morgan's place.  I've also included the cam card and last dyno run.

I know it's not a truck, but I think you'd be able to pull a mobile home behind you with those torque numbers! I don't think you'll need much throttle to move that Galaxie, that's for sure.

Some more details about the build: 735 cfm Cobra Jet carb from Blair's stash, Ed Performer RPM intake, BBM heads, OE non-adjustable valve train with heavy-duty shafts, Power by Ford valve covers from a '71 pickup, Comp Hyd. Roller cam, Scat crank, OE front cover, Pioneer balancer, and Milodon stock replacement oil pan and pickup.  I acquired the '68 date-coded SO block a few years ago from a friend and it cleaned up at 4.240".

Nice build!  Any videos of the dyno run?  What is the comp ratio?

Throw caution to the wind.  Time to make friends with the local tire guy :-)

Hey Bruce, congrats on engine. Now that you have enough torque to pull a fuel trailer, which could come in handy, what are you gonna do for a transmission? May need a fresh set of U-joints too.

Jimeast, no video of the runs. I was just enjoying the moment!  Comp. ratio is 9.5:1, selected by Blair based on the parameters I gave him.

John, the current trans is the stock Cruise-o, and stock rear gear which is about 3:00-3:20:1.  New u-joints are on the list!  I'm also looking at AOD and AOD-E trans options.  I think I'm going to get it on the road first, then do the trans work/swap as a separate project since that will involve a new crossmember, driveshaft, and rear gear.
