Ford On Ford: Single Wheel 3/4 To 1 Ton Hub, Will It Fit?
« on: December 29, 2018, 08:06:04 PM »
Moving a mid 70's motorhome I have not seen yet. If a couple of tires are flat will a couple of 3/4 ton spares fit the front hubs?
Thanks

I assume the motorhome is a standard 1-ton dually chassis with 8 bolt wheels? If so, they will fit, but will be about 6" wider so it won't drive/steer for crap.
2021 Ram 2500 4x4 Cummins of course!

They also might stick out too far and hit the body on a turn. FYI the old Fords had left hand threads on the left rear wheels.

Thank you Nisaacs...This is hilarious. Some years ago a local shop asked if I would bring my 1 inch impact down.He was dealing with a left rear wheel on a 3/4 ton.Early 80's)After a couple of minutes a look at the stud end showed a faint L

I did not know that Ford did that as well. I have seen a few old Dodge's like that. Must have been a Dana thing?

At least Ford had sense enough to use a tapered nut on the stud centric coined dually wheels. Dodge used a flat faced nut, so those in the know, carry two tapered nuts so they can center the wheels. Those not in the know, put up with a bouncing wheel, Lol.

This left hand nut business reminds me of my 56 coe that I removed the frt wheels on. I jacked the frt left side up and put a 3/4 breaker bar on with the proper sized socket. Lots of blaster and a lot of grunting. the nut started to turn and quit. More blaster and now some heat. barely moving. Let cool and more blaster and heat. Slowly starts to turn. Put a pipe on the bar, now we`re getting some were. Result, nut comes off very tight and finally get it off. Only then did I see the "L" on the stud. Forgot about the L & R studs. Egg on my face on this one. My 63 Pontiac has L & R nuts but I did remember them on that car.

I'm sure it's a case of spindle mounted wheels from the bygone era.Wonder if the covered wagon's had LH threads?.....Studebaker probably started it....   https://www.hansenwheel.com/resources/faqs-wagon-history.

Just curious, but are you after the chassis, the motorhome or both?

Don't know yet. Never known what you'll find swapped into the old beast. I have seen a 12 Valve Cummins, 460, 428CJ and MEL's take the place of the 390 in these things. Saw a 390 take the place of a Flarhead 6 once. Likely a Dana 70 with the same mounting as mine. If it has 3.54:1 gears I am taking it.

You can never have too many automotive goodies. Motorhomes are heavy and wind resistant so most likely 4.10 or maybe even 4.56. I have a GM class A chassis with 19.5's and it has 4.88's.

Saw a Class A Winnebago come through the shop with a Cummins, Alison and 3.54 Dana 80. It was on a late 70's Dodge chassis. Came in for brale check, the man that built it said he was too old to climb around under it. Not uncommon to see engine and drive train swaps.
