1963 3x2 Intake Setup
« on: May 29, 2018, 03:33:47 PM »
So I recently stumbled upon a 1963 390 with a 3x2 intake.  I ended up buying the motor mostly for the intake alone, but now I'm not exactly sure what I've got, or how to go about finish setting it up. The gentleman I bought the motor from didn't know too much about it, other than the previous owner complained about a coolant leak.  During my tear-down, I discovered a significant crack in the passengers side head on the outside between number 2 and 3 cylinders.  The spark plugs in 2 and 4 were completely torched and the freeze plug behind the engine mount was missing.  I also noticed that there was no thermostat when I pulled the waterneck, leading me to think that the engine was running hot in general and he probably shocked it.
Anyway, I dropped the short block off at my local engine builder (USA Machine in Nashville) and they're going to let me know what the prognosis is.  I already mic'd the block and it's a 390 that was bored .030 over at some point in the past.   Like most of you on this forum, I've got plenty of parts to finish the motor (at least in a 4v configuration), but what I'm lacking is any experience with the 3x2 intake.  There were no carbs with this engine, and I'm not exactly sure where to even begin looking to find the correct setup.  I'm definitely interested in both learning more, and tracking down a supply for the correct carbs.  Any help is appreciated!

Carl's Ford Parts in Ohio has new reproduction carbs for the 3X2 setup, or at least he did.  I bought a set from him several years ago, along with the linkage, and they worked great.   www.carlsfordparts.com

Thanks Jay,
After doing some research it sounds like Carl may be the only one offering the reman Holley carbs.  There hasn't been a lot of chatter lately, and his website hasn't been updated in a while, but he does still have the kits listed for sale.  I'll reach out to him once I get closer to finishing this thing off and I'll update here.  Great lead, thanks again!

I ordered parts from him just last week, he is certainly still in business.
