Title: Hemi Joel gets '31 Plymouth Coupe to the track to test for Drag Week 2018
Post by: thatdarncat on August 30, 2018, 01:51:30 AM
After years of hard work Hemi Joel finally got his '31 Plymouth Coupe to the track to test tonight in preparation for Drag Week 2018! And with a week to spare before Joel & Jeff leave for Atlanta lol. Joel had hoped to be ready to test at Rock Falls Raceway in Wisconsin on a couple recent weekends, but there were too many things to finish, and those opportunities passed. Brainerd International Raceway runs a Wednesday night Street Drags program periodically over the summer, mostly a grudge race and time trial type event for licensed vehicles, and last night was one of the last chances to get some runs before Drag Week. Joel's Trunk Monkey Jeff and I meet Joel at his house Wednesday afternoon and packed up some tools and loaded up the coupe. We had a perfect day, with temps in the low 70's, and clear sky's. Brainerd Raceway opens the gates at 4pm, and then starts tech inspection and lining up cars in staging, and starts running cars down the track at 5pm, running until sundown, which was about 8:30pm. The track announcer told everyone that they had a record turnout for a Wednesday night Street Drag event at over 160 cars, so unfortunately we were limited on time runs. We're not going to post any ET results here ( sorry ), so as not to tip off any of his Drag Week competitors that might be watching, but Joel was able to get 3 relatively mild passes in, which helped in getting comfortable with the car. He's got a few issues to address that cropped up, along with a bunch of things that are still on the to-do list, but right now things look good for making Drag Week. Joel will be pretty busy over the next week to finish getting ready, so I don't know if he will have a chance to comment here, but maybe. Meanwhile, here's a few pictures from tonight.

At last, my former trunk monkey looks like he will make Drag Week with something other than a parade car!  Good luck to Joel and Jeff.

Joel is running the "Hot Rod" class, for 1928-1948 American cars in the traditional '50's hot rod style. Pre 1968 engine families, and no EFI. Plus a few more rules of course. Hot Rod class cars also not to be "Gasser" style - there's a separate Gasser class.

Very cool Jay and Kevin as I do hope he does well.

But, I do have one question!

Where do I ship a couple of spray cans of Rustoleum spray primer to make that ride look presentable?

LOL!  ;D ;D ;D

Wow, a week before the event?!! He's going to ruin your guys' reputation for last second thrashes..lol
Glad to see he'll make it this year. Shouldn't have any problem spotting his car. I was going to take some guess as to whether I'd be able to get in the 15's or be relegated to the 16's, but I didn't want to tip off any of the guys in Big Block NA either ;D ;D

Very cool ride!  Not sure it will be cool in temp (or comfortable) but you will certainly get an iron butt award for the week!

Awesome car and good luck

Glad to see Joel has his 8 potential fuel leaks working. Now if he can just keep the pressure low enough..Trailer hitch.......?

My experience says those are more than potential leaks.. Maybe instead of pump and regulator trying to get down to 2lb fuel pressure he could rig gravity feed.

Just kidding .... Go get'em Joel.

Just go easy on the anti-seize...

Only needs one thing to be perfect. The inside of the carb scoops need to be painted red. That's it. Awesome car.

That is a cool hot rod! Is that a 392 Hemi?  What times and MPH did it run?

It is a 392 Mopar Hemi. For now Joel is keeping the testing ET & MPH confidential, mostly for the drama, but also so as not to tip off his fellow Drag Week competitors of the Coupe's potential.

Atlanta Dragway announced last week they will have a test session for Drag Week participants on this coming Friday night, and right now Joel & Jeff plan on being there. Atlanta Dragway also has a bracket race on Saturday, and it sounds like they will try to accommodate some Drag Week testing between rounds there too.

Hemi Joel and his Trunk Monkey Jeff were able to get some test passes in again yesterday at Grove Creek Raceway. Grove Creek is an 1/8 mile track about 1 1/2 hours northwest of the Twin Cities. I wasn't able to go with yesterday, so I don't have a first hand report, but it sounds like the Coupe survived in one piece. Here's a picture Jeff took.

Here's a link to the first go round of this 392 on Jay's dyno. Not a glorious start. Unfortunately Joel never did a follow up report on what was wrong and what got fixed. This post has some of the specs of the engine, but after this dyno session, if I remember, the block got fixed and a different cam was selected, and maybe some cylinder head repair was needed. And as seen in the current pictures, Joel went with the 8 - 2V induction. I don't think the rebuilt engine ever got dyno'd.

The main water leak issue was with the cylinder heads, the CNC porting went through in a very small spot in the water jacket at one point, and that caused all the water troubles we had on the dyno.  Interestingly, Joel took it to one place who pressure checked it and said it was fine, so he didn't bother to look any further for a while.  When it kept leaking, he finally took it to another place, and they found the leak.  The engine has not been dynoed since it has been back together, but I was talking to Joel earlier today and the times he ran at Grove Creek were quite promising...

Cool car, hope he gets through the whole week.

So after last weekends test session Joel figured out the Coupe didn't have rear end gears he thought he had. Joel called Moser this week and ordered a new complete pumpkin and Joel & Jeff stopped at Moser on Thursday afternoon on the way. They arrived at the track in Atlanta this afternoon and got the gears changed, unfortunately it started to rain after that, so I don't think they got a chance to test.

I got a text from Jeff this morning, Joel ran 10.263 @ 133.53 on a test & tune pass. He said it's hot & muggy in Atlanta today.

**I had to edit to correct the ET.

That's great!  :)

With a 135 mph, he should dip into the high 9's. What was his 60' on that run btw?

Next pass 10.155 @ 135.

1.468 60', he should easily be able to improve that.
