Non-FE Discussion Forum / 289 build
« on: November 12, 2019, 08:42:15 PM »
I bought a 66 mustang with the original 289 engine. Anyway it was full of water and has been for a while. I pulled it then took it apart. I broke it loose after I got the heads off. My question is how can I clean it up so I can rebuild it or should I get another . It is all standard bore and bearings so I hope I can rebuild it.

Other than weight, what is the advantage of having a aluminum dual plane intake for a 390?

FE Technical Forum / 390 using a quart in 600 miles
« on: October 22, 2019, 05:35:36 PM »
My rebuilt 390 is using about one quart of oil in 600 miles. It is not smoking. It runs like a champ. I have put about 3000 miles on it since the machine shop did a complete rebuild. I have changed the pvc valve. The machine shop said just drive it and keep him posted. Where is the oil going? I do not want to pull this engine again and take it back to him Any ideas??

FE Technical Forum / pvc sucking oil
« on: August 09, 2019, 07:13:44 PM »
How can I make sure my pvc is not sucking oil into the carb base. I have chrome valve covers and the guy who build my engine said the aftermarket valve covers dont have a good baffle and he thinks the oil is going through the pvc valve. The 390 is using too much oil. I only have 2500 miles on a complete rebuild and at 700 miles I have went through 2 quarts.

FE Technical Forum / labor knocking
« on: August 07, 2019, 08:26:19 PM »
I have a rebuilt 390 in my 79 bronco. I have the spark advance unhooked for the time being. I had a tank full of 93 octane gas and have the timing set at 11 degrees. The total timing is about 34 degrees. I was going down the interstate about 70  and stepped on the gas and it labor knocked like crazy. What is the deal. I was having trouble with this before that is why I unhooked the spark advance. I have a one wire dist and the engine has around 2000 miles on the rebuild by a machine shop. It has a small comp cam. If I slow the timing down any more it is sluggish

FE Technical Forum / 390 loading up when hot
« on: July 20, 2019, 10:19:07 PM »
My newly rebuilt 390 want to load up and not idle when the weather is hot like it has been here in Arkansas the last week. It has a 600 edelbrock on a stock intake. I bought a 1 inch spacer plate that was suppose to shield the carb. from the heat of the intake. It  has not helped. What spacer do I need and how can I make this engine idle when hot?

Now that I have 390 broken in or at least I think I do. I have driven it about 1200 miles. I am a little disappointed with the power. It has the comp cam 33-234-4. This engine does not want to pull as good down low as my old 390. It is bored 60 with stock heads and balanced. Why did my old worn out 390 seem to have more power. It was also bored 60 over stock heads with a rv type cam. The new engine has almost stopped burning oil but still has a slight smell of an old lawn mower that smokes. Maybe I just need to drive it some more miles. Also I have a hei dist. Can I do something it so it does not advance so much. I have it adjusted all the way out and am still getting some pinging at light throttle at highway speed. I set the timing again today to 34 total then test drove it it pinged a little at wide open throttle pulling a hill with the spark advance unplugged and plugged. So I backed off the timing 2 degrees but have not drove it yet.

FE Technical Forum / breaking in cam 390 fe oil pressure
« on: March 20, 2019, 07:31:43 PM »
I just finished installing my 390 ford.I had the same machine shop build this engine that built my last 390 Anyway I fired it up and was breaking in the cam holding the rpms at 1800. The oil pressure started out at about 55 psi. About 15 mins into the break in the oil pressure started to drop. It stopped at 25 psi at 2000 rpm. After 20 mins I let it idle so I could set the timing and the oil pressure was 10 psi. I revved up to 2300 and the pressure was about 28 psi. Why did it go from 55 to 25 after 15 mins? Is this pressure good? It seems a little low to me. My old 390 would idle at 20 psi and was about 45 at high way speed.

I got my 390 back from the machine shop today. It is bored 60 with some exhaust work on the heads. It has a comp cam part number 33-234-4. The shop said it was built for torque. I also had it balanced with stronger rod bolts and valve springs. What kind of horsepower and torque should it make. It has the stock 4 barrel intake and stock heads with the exhaust work

FE Technical Forum / 390 build

I am thinking about having my 390 rebuilt by a machine shop that built it over 20 years ago. My question is about the gas mileage. When it was first done I could get around 12 miles per gallon. I am wanting more horse power so he is going to port and polish the heads, balance the lower end and put some kind of cam in it. Is this going to kill the gas mileage. He said it would make around 350 horse. I know is will depend on what cam but just dont want it to get 4 miles per gallon

FE Technical Forum / 390 gas mileage

I installed a hei distributor in my 390 with new plugs and wires a couple of months ago. The first thing I noticed was my mileage went from 8 to 11. I was surprised but happy. This was driving in town. Now I am back down to 8-9. What is different. I can not get any better than 8-9 now no matter what I do. How was it up to 11 for a few tanks right after all the new stuff?

I went with hei on my 390. This distributor is what was on it and it is less than 6 month old. The pickup coil in it is brand new. I only drove it a few times. I also have a spare new never used pickup coil that goes with it. I thought my problem was the pick up and it ended up being my control modular. I want 100 dollars plus shipping.
