Help i.d. these heads 406 390 ?
« on: January 27, 2020, 09:26:42 PM »
C3AE-C, casting dates of mid December 62 and early January 63. Spring cups. Like to think they are 406 6V heads but they cc at 67. What say ye?
Thanks,
JB

What size exhaust valves? They should be 406 heads with those dates and spring cups and maybe just in the high end of tolerance for chamber size.

The heads could have been machined for spring cups latter or be on the big side like BH107 said.

The owner has measured the exhaust valves at 1.6 so that is right for a 406. What if someone did machine for the cups later? Unless the springs/cups are removed and there is a tell tale difference between Ford's machining and aftermarket machining how are we to be certain? 56 cc as cast to 67 cc seems like a big difference.

56.4 seems very small for that combustion chamber shape. The 390 set C heads I had were 67 cc. The seemingly cramped C0AE-D head has about 60cc.

I had visited Mustang Tek myself. The 67 cc that lines up with 390 heads is making it difficult to jump up and call my friends heads the 406 version of the C head.

Going by faded memory here, but the 406 heads I have seen in the long ago past, had seat cups like the 289 hp, actually cast into the heads, not milled into them.  I may be wrong, but that is how I remember them.  Joe-JDC

Builder at machine shop where heads are removed a valve today so we could see the surface. This machining does not look like Ford work to me. What say ye?
Also, the intake valve measured 2.025
Thanks,

The 406 heads are C2SE-C

Hi Keith, there are definitely C2 406 heads but there are also some C3-C heads. That’s where it gets tricky because there are C3-C 390 heads in a very similar time period. I’m trying to help a friend figure out which ones he has.

I had them years ago. C2SE-6090-C They had spring seats like the 427 heads. They were off a tri-power 406. they were 64CC chambers
I hope that's helpful.

Keith,

Check the pic above in this thread that shows the head surface beneath the spring. Did the heads you had have a cast in cup for the springs a la the 289 HiPo heads? Several old threads have alluded to the 406 6V  head having the machined in or cast in cups but I have not seen any pictures of one.

Thanks,
JB

The 67 cc High Altitude 390 C3AE-C I had looked like that. I never saw the C3AE-C 406 version off the car.

406 heads are C2SE or C3SE. I tried to post picture earlier. I have the same spring cups as you do. The head was machined for them. from the factory. Let me see if I can convert the files so I can attach them.
