FE Technical Forum / Re: Distributor stuck in block.

Thanks for all the responses.
Well, the shaft turns now. Timing chain and gears are off and was able to get cam turning with distributor still not budging. Distributor is not corroded. Again, motor has been sitting for decades. I have been putting heat on the block (small bottle torch) where I can get it and tapping case to try and get it to start moving, from bottom and on top trying to get the case to spin. So it's stuck where aluminum touches cast iron in the block. I guess patience and tapping and putting a solution on it (maybe trying your suggestions). At least I know exactly what is holding it in now that the shaft turns.

I guess there's only so many things you can do. Can't pry hard or will damage case. It won't move at all. Case is welded to the shaft and shaft welded to the block. That's what is feels like. Yes I will first have to get the case to spin or move on the shaft.

FE Technical Forum / Distributor stuck in block.

Hello, I have a distributor that won't budge. Motor has been sitting for decades. I pulled the pan and the distributor gear looks OK (no rust) but the rods do have surface rust. All in all the insides didn't look too bad. Heads are off and intake will move around so it is stuck in the bottom. I pulled the pan and put heat on the nose where it rests in the block as have been tapping the oil pump drive rod (not too hard) been putting PB Blaster on it and it won't budge or even spin on the shaft. It's a CJ distributor so don't want to damage it. Next I'm going to put spacers under the intake (to raise it up for more access maybe an inch or 2) and see if I can get channel locks (with rubber to protect distributor casting) on the part that rests in the intake where the rubber seal is and see if I can at least get it to spin.
At this point I'm willing to listen to any suggestions, Thank you

No description on what "427 CI" is. Is it a 390-truck block bored and stroked? What casting cylinder heads, cam, compression,.??
Amazing

Why would heating cause that? I removed 2 drain plugs by heating around plugs no issues. Or did someone use a blow torch on this and get it red hot?

What thickness at what bore are you looking for?

What specs are you wanting?

Does anyone have pictures of a standard end support stand that has been machined down to fit a Factory Ford C4AE High Riser Head as I have read here?

40
Tom, well that is an idea. Never heard of that approach of a bar overhead and the end support hanging down. How about just a single overhead piece for each end? Do you have any pictures to post? Were you planning on stock rockers or roller rockers?

What are options for a Ductile Iron sleeve. Stepped, etc? For the 427 428 motors? Thanks

Thanks for the input, so you have used the T&D stands for the High Riser cut down and they worked OK if I read correctly? I am assuming of course with the end stands cut down.
Yes, Presision Oil Pumps said to me that he was working on exactly what I described but that was a couple of years ago and I don't get any responses when I recently inquired about it.
Harland sharp and Blue Thunder having STEEL end support stands, if they were made I don't think they are any longer available nor have I ever seen a set for sale.
Everything being said it would be nice for someone to make them in steel for previous reasons noted.
It just isn't reassuring that when you remove almost all of the material on the bottom which extends to the actual end of the stand it would be very strong in aluminum.

Yes Blykins, thank you for the reply, but the aluminum ones (designed for the Low and Medium Riser and Tunnel port) are cut down for use on the High Riser and makes them much weaker. The support area on the bottom is probably more than 1/2 way cut down. That's why I was suggesting someone make a steel version for the High Riser.
But I take it you are saying that the aluminum ones even cut down add a lot of support. It just doesn't look like a lot of material would be left for support.
I am running a .600 solid flat tappet cam with no crazy spring pressures and I have already broken the end rocker off in 500 miles. Just looking for a simple solution. Other than cam motor is stock.
Rory428, end support stands.
Thanks again.

That is great info Frank. I heard about the step sleeves for an FE from Melling. Didn't know all available sources though.
