Found the specs over on mercurystuff.com. 406 was .045-.065 IIRC that's what I measured before tear down. After taking .015/.020 off I got to the lower spec or just a few thousand more. This FT block must have had a hard life as it had a twist to it. End result is it runs fine, doesn't spark knock or overheat here in the Az. desert.

Not a 428, but I used a FT block to repair a 406. I found the deck height with the FT left the pistons waaay more in the hole than I wanted. I think I had 0.015-0.020 taken off the deck and the pistons ended up where factory 406/427's in a FE block sat. Don't recall what the spec was.

Looks like both guys really knew there cars looking at dial in times and what they actually ran.

I feel your pain. I don't know what the PO used to seal the aluminum 3x2 intake with but it wouldn't budge. Finally took a couple gasket scrapers and tapped them in between the intake and heads at the exhaust crossover area. After a while it finally broke loose. I scrapped for hours on that intake.

Usually when you can change the noise by accelerating or deaccelerating it's a gear noise.

Nice score. I just got back into FE's last year for the about the same reason. Ran across one last year at the Run to the Sun show in Lk. Havasu. Car looked bone stock but had a built 427 in it. After looking it over and talking with the owner I was hooked. Searched a while for one that I could afford and finally found one. Good starting point with a 406, 3x2's and toploader and its rust free but has a lot of ugly and wtf repairs done to it. Plan is to return it to close to stock as I can. Slowly getting there.

Don't know if the bolt size is the same but early Yblocks used a screw/locknut set up. Might be worth checking out.

I have a Marantz receiver/amp I still listen to my tunes with. Had it so long it must be considered an antique. Had a problem with it about 10yrs ago. Didn't know if I should have it repaired or just replace it. Glad now I had it fixed. Back in the day I played my old Gibson Melody Maker thru an old Fender amp. The amp was old when I bought it. It was awesome. Still have the Gibson. Don't know what happened to the amp though. I think my brother sold it while after I was drafted. He won't admit it though.

Mentioning a stall convertor is a rare occurrence with me since everything I've ever built had 3 pedals. To me it's like the people that rag on about the term 3/4 cam we used way back when. That was just the term everyone used. No different than seeing a cam listed as a "RV cam" now. What, your going to take your hot rod camping? Just the terms used now.

I like the comment on "twisted panties". Maybe we should start a Twisted Panty section.

My 61 Starliner w/406 has ps. Has brackets and pump like nhsohc mentioned. I also have the fuel canister, fuel lines and coil mounted behind the ps pump. No problems with anything fitting.

Great find. You must be a lonely guy being a Maytag restorer.

believe it or not, I recently run a 390 on a harbor freight furniture dolly. the $18 one with the 4 casters. I used a piece of 4x4 under the front to keep the pulley clear & that was it. I use these to move engines around & they seemed real stable on them. Put a bell & starter on it hot wired a conventional dist. & just sat the radiator in front of it with a box fan. didn't use the water pump fan just in case it fell over. The most it shook was right when it fired, but after that was real smooth. My neighbor stuck around to watch & call 911. Keep a fire extinguisher around, just in case. I shoulda made a video of it.
Back in the 60's when I was 16 I had picked up a 241 Dodge Red Ram Hemi. Don't remember what I used to support the rear of the engine but I used an old 50's chrome kitchen chair frame to support the front. No rad, little coolant and no exhaust I fired it up and of course I reved the piss out of it. It's a wonder the thing just didn't roll off my "stand" down the driveway but it stayed there. My Mom was worried about the neighbors complaining about the loud exhaust but when my old man came home (he was a mechanic) he made me disassemble it and threatened me with bodily harm if I fired it up again.

Sweet! Friend has a 54 conv. we just pulled the yblock out of to send to the paint shop. He's not sure what to put back in it yet. He's leaning towards a sbf but he also has a couple FEs laying around.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Carb Spacer Intake Compatibility
« on: March 13, 2017, 09:05:34 AM »
On the spacer shown where the pcv fitting is you see the back of the spacer has "hump" built into it. It's open underneath the spacer and has to seal to the manifold. On the OE manifold its machined to fit a spacer like that. If the Edelbrock has the same machining it will work. I tried that spacer on a yblock manifold (without that machining) and ended up with a giant vacuum leak. Hope that make sense.
