FE Technical Forum / Re: Problem with Edelbrock Stage 2 heads
« on: January 10, 2021, 12:15:47 PM »
Update on problem #5 exhaust.  After removing the valve cover, I was surprised to see that the valves were perfectly in line.  Now I know that #5 exhaust was tilted towards the intake last time I checked WTF.  But after removing the rocker shaft assembly there were witness marks on the bottom side of the rocker where it had contacted the retainer (nice semi-circle pattern).  Now I know I'm not crazy and the valve was at least at one time tilted.  Next step is to remove the intake and head.  I will keep you informed on the continuing saga.

Joe,  The whole spring assembly has tilted toward the intake which leads me to believe that the seat has shifted.  The spring appears to be still seated squarely on the bottom.  You are right about disassembly but that will have to wait until warmer weather and motivation.  Just trying to get my ducks in a row about repair or replace and getting needed gaskets etc to do the job.

After some research on aftermarket aluminum heads they all say that they are set up for hydraulic roller applications.  That was initially what was in the stroker and was OK but there seemed to be a lot more potential HP on the table.  So I switched to a fairly mild solid roller with the recommended springs thinking that this should be all that was needed.  I assumed (yah-I know the definition) that high dollar CNC ported heads with premium hardware in the head build would take a solid street roller cam and I still do.  1.  What exactly is the difference in the head build between hydraulic and solid cams?  2.  Is it feasible cost wise to upgrade the heads to solid compatibility especially since one seat has decided to relocate itself.  I am very close to 70 so my days of wrenching are numbered and I want to get this right because the car is going to be passed down to my grandson.

FE Technical Forum / Problem with Edelbrock Stage 2 heads

Awhile back I purchased a pair of Edelbrock Stage 2 CNC ported from a known vender.  After breaking a roller rocker on #5 exhaust I noticed that the valve and spring were not in line with the others on the head.  It is tilted towards the intake enough to make the rocker arm ride off the valve tip and hit the retainer.  I am sure that out of the box all the valves were in line.  Before I contact the vendor I need to pick the brains of the gurus on here as to what would cause this and what might be the fix.  I did change the cam from a hydraulic roller to a solid roller with the recommended springs if that has anything to do with it.  Thanks in advance.

I am running the Hooker Super Comp 1 3/4" pipes.  My combination in the '68 produces 600+ HP at the flywheel.  The few times I let it all hang out through the gears, the engine continued to pull awesomely up to the rev limiter set at 6400.  I am using a Comp Cam solid roller and 6400 seemed to be the top of the torque curve so why push it.  Exhaust system could limit just as much as smaller header tubes.

I have heard that there is a difference between the full set head gaskets (8554PT) and the 1020's.  Maybe someone in the know will chime in.  For a stock type rebuild iron to iron the 8554 is fine but iron to aluminum I have been told that the 1020's or Cometic is the way to go.  Edelbrock does have different torque figures for the upper and lower bolts/studs.  As stated before, cleanliness and correct torqueing sequence a little at a time until full torque is achieved is key.

I just replaced the motor and box (Dynacorn) on my '68.  It too had the vent hole behind the wires on the motor.  Because the car is not driven in colder weather, I applied a dab of black silicone closing the hole off to the elements.  I suppose that if driven in colder weather a person could use a piece of flexible hose shoved in the hole and silicone around it.

Ross,  Some of my USAF buddies when they got out/retired went right back to work at the same base as a GS doing close to the same things.  Better pay for sure and everyone already knows you.  Father-in-law retired as a E-9, then worked at the same base for another 20 years.  Something to think about.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Engine Bay Questions - Wiring, Motor Mounts
« on: February 02, 2020, 10:57:55 AM »
When I frenched the shock towers on my '68 I noticed that there was a fair amount of room between the spring and the inner shock tower.  What an ideal place to run the wiring I thought after a few 12oz lifts.  So I took a length of 3/4" PVC and drilled the shock tower about three inches above the frame rail on both sides and slid the PVC through the holes.  Secured it with a 3/4" PVC coupler sawed in half and glued the halves on both sides of the shock tower to keep it in place.  Had enough room to run all the wires and the sensor for the water temperature through the PVC.  Before running the wiring, I painted the exposed PVC black the match the engine bay paint.  You have to look close to see what was done.  Granted it is a lot easier to do this with the FE removed.  I have never seen another shock tower car done this way but now my secret is out.

Instead of individual spacers under the stands, what about using the desired thickness of plate steel/aluminum drilled for the stand bolts and oiling hole in the heads.  I would think that a one piece spacer would be more secure than 4 individual ones.

Guys,  Hate to let her go but due to bum back it's a challenge even to wash her.  Anyway, it's a coupe owned since 1973 with a fresh Genesis side oiler 4.250 X 4.125 = 468 CID.  Short block purchased from Doug at Precision Oil Pumps.  Heads are Keith Craft Stage 2 Edelbrocks with Hooker headers.  Blue Thunder 2 X 4 intake with 2 - 750 CFM Quick Fuel carbs from Survival.  Doug's roller rocker setup with Comp Cams solid roller.  Ram clutch with Lakewood shield.  David Kee toploader big in/out in wide ratio.  David Kee 9" 3.50 Traction-Loc 31 spline.  All drivetrain components have less than 5,000 miles but were purchased a few years ago.  Car is only driven to shows and cruise ins and garage kept.  These are only the major things listed as there are too many accessories and features to list here.  I will try and attach pictures but if I can't, go to Greensboro, NC Craigs list to see them.  Like I said I hate to let her go but it needs to go to a good home where someone can take advantage of the work and money spent which is a lot!  If interested please email me at jwilliams16@triad.rr.com or call 336-314-1492.  Asking 35,000 OBO.

Listing for a friend that is not internet savvy.  Parts are mostly FE related and Ford.  He wishes to sell as a lot and has done a complete inventory of what he has.  Smaller parts have been boxed and a inventory sheet is in each box.  located in Greensboro, NC and he would like to sell the parts ASAP so he doesn't have to move them.  Because there are so many inventory sheets, I will not try and attach them here so anyone interested please email me at jwilliams16@triad.rr.com and I will email the inventory to you along with his name and phone number.  Please don't ask me to price someone else's property but this could be one heck of a deal.  Parts include blocks, cranks, rods, pistons, factory headers, intakes, rear ends, many complete Holleys and small Holley parts - too much to list here.  He also has a 1966 Galaxie ex NC Highway Patrol car with a 427 center oiler also for sale separately.

Question for Barry and Jay while we are on this topic.  I have a pair of Barry's 750 carbs on the way.  They are going on a Blue Thunder 2 X 4 medium riser intake (468 CID Genesis).  Would there be any advantage to running 2" tall open spacers?

A short length of chain running from the left side frame ( or other ridged surface ) to the left head will serve two purposes.  It will serve as a support when the tranny is removed and a short leash to keep from breaking the left side motor mount under severe FE torque.  Cheap insurance.
