FE Technical Forum / Cam Pin Questions
« on: June 19, 2012, 01:50:19 PM »
I have all my parts now for the stroker kit going in the 65 PI block. The engine had the molded nylon gear on an aluminum base and the pin is firmly in place, it will need to be pressed out to be reused. But I was able to see if the pin would fit the Ford Motorsport Timming Gear I have for the build. It goes in with no slop but is not like the fit in the old gear. I also test fit the pin into the Comp 270S cam and if it does fit it would need to be pressed in (maybe some time in the freezer first)

So what's the deal, I have read bad things happening associated with the pin comming out after assembly and chewing up valves or being too short for the fuel pump ecentric and needing a ball bearing to lengthen it.

Is there a replacement pin I should be looking for? Where is the interference fit for the pin suppose to take place? In the Cam or in the Cam Gear. I want to have my shit together when I take everything to the builder tomorrow. Thanks. ww

FE Technical Forum / 390 vs 445 Oiling Demand
« on: June 14, 2012, 08:44:57 AM »
I have all the parts now for my 445 shortblock.  The standard cylinders cleaned up at 4.065 and will be finished to 4.070 when the builder has the 4.070 dished Diamond pistons in hand along with all of the other machining work. Including whatever oiling system modifications.

Although this car is a genuine 65 Police Interceptor and it absolutluy, positivly has the origional block from the factory it is not a Solid Lifter block as you would expect.  Evidently they substituted a juice block and filled it with all of the correct PI parts including the 427 rods and solid lifter valve train.

The engine had over 130K miles on it (lots of winding out the gears with a 4 speed/3.25 gears) and experienced minimal wear. Even the crank only needs micro polishing to be reused so obviously there is nothing wrong with the factory oiling system in it's factory configuration.

But it's going back together with a 445 stroker, a Comp 270S cam (mild), a POP blueprinted standard volume pump and two port oil filter adaptor, Canton factoty oil pan and pickup and Edelbrock 72cc heads and a LR 8V induction.

This is not going to be a race car but a high end restoration show car cruiser retaining it's 3.25 gears. I will run an MSD unit and probably limit it to 4800-5000.

I know I heed to restrick the oil flow to the heads but what NEEDS TO BE DONE to the block.  Is the oiling demand for the 445 crank & rods different from the factory 390?  Given my intended usage I don't wnat to fix something that may not be broke.

As usual your thought and opinions are appreciated. ww

FE Technical Forum / When You Bolt Together YOUR FE Engine
« on: May 21, 2012, 06:06:26 PM »
What do you use to lubricate the various threads and where like a blind hole or one going into a water jacket.

Do you use Thread Locker anywhere? If so, where and what type? Thanks. ww

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Ford FR-9 NASCAR Engine
« on: May 10, 2012, 08:04:30 PM »
I just watched a segment on the Science Channel where they followed the detailed assembly of a Ford FR-9 NASCAR Race Engine at Roush Yates.

What an engine!

You can see the attention paid to cooling and lubrication, not to mention the cylinder heads and valve train, it's something to see. ww

FE Technical Forum / Rotunda/Faria Tach With an MSD 6AL-2 or Digital 6
« on: April 24, 2012, 03:06:27 PM »
I have a real nice Rotunda 8K tach & NOS cup that I want to have restored and use it on the P-Code restoration. But I also am thinking about running an MSD Pro Billet Dist and either a 6AL-2 or Digital 6 Ignition Amplifier. Has anyone made this combo work? I assume you would need to use the MSD "Tach Adaptor" if it did.

How about using one of these classic tachs with a Pertronix Ignitor or Ignitor II? Anyone have this setup working?

For those using a Rotunda/Faria tach, what ignition system are you using?

As always your input is appreciated. ww

FE Technical Forum / Edelbrock 427 Heads on a 390 block
« on: March 20, 2012, 08:09:56 PM »
I plan on using box stock Edelbrock 6007 72cc 427 heads on my 390 P-Code block.  The cam will be a Comp 270S.  Should I anticipate any interference problems with the valves and the 390's 4.05 bore?

The block (now standard bore) is awaiting cleaning, sonic map and mag so I don't know what the overbore will be.  But I want to keep it to a minimum required, I will spec custom pistons from Diamond pistons if required. Thanks. ww

FE Technical Forum / Rear Main Cap Removal
« on: March 14, 2012, 08:09:11 PM »
I attempted to remove the crank from the P-Code block for it's date with the engine builder tomorrow but the rear main cap was beyond my experience/tools.  I am going to have the crank removed by them (it's getting a stroker) but I wanted to know how it's done.  The center cap wasn't budging either. Thanks. ww

FE Technical Forum / Buying a New Torque Wrench
« on: March 11, 2012, 01:49:01 PM »
After I built the 445 back in 2008 I gave my torque wrench to my youngest son who is not close by and I need to buy another one for the P-Code engine.  I want a reliable one but I don't want to invest a fortune, it will see very little use.  I think 20-150 ft/lbs will be my range.  Your suggestions are appreciated. ww
