FE Technical Forum / 416 progress
« on: January 13, 2019, 12:38:01 PM »
Went to the machine shop yesterday to see how the new engine was progressing. The short block is complete. The forged 390 pistons had to have the tops cut so the tops would not stick up past the decks. I already knew that would happen with the 428 crank. Bought a new eagle crank cause the old one was scratched and bent. The block. Rods and lifter bores were honed and the cam degrees. He was checking the heads and valve clearances yesterday. The intake will have to be test fitted also because the dark was cut. So far 2500 dollars in machining and parts. I probably could have switched to the 460 for what it's going to cost to do this fe. Too late now. I stacked up on fe blocks.

I just make sure all surfaces and threads are clean, push or rap lightly on the center of the balancer is in far enough to start threading the retaining bolt and tighten until it stops. If you get a lot p.s. resisyance, stop and check alignments.

I went .040 on a mirror 105 390 block, 418 ci. Using 428 crank and rods. The shop will start fitting the pistons and balancing the rotating assay before assembling the short block. Im using 2.15 and 1.72 valves so the reliefs have to be enlarged for the lift I'm using. I'll post as the build goes along.

I finally got some pistons. I got the forged L2291 .040 pack with rings. I talked to my machinist and decided to put the piston at 0 deck and machine the valve pockets for proper clearance. Now for fitting the pistons and balancing the rotating assy.

The Mahler pack is an .030 piston.

I'll check on the mahle pistons. Thanks. I think that any truck piston after 68 was actually a 410 piston with the raised pin to lower compression.

I meant raised the pin to lower the piston.

I may have to use 410 pistons or custom made. Just to clear info on the block. It's  a mirror 105 block, bored .040, and .020 taken off the head surface. Using 428 crank and rods. Yes the pin needs to be lower and maybe cut the top of the pistons. Thanks

The deck was cut .020. I do have larger valves but he will modify the pistons to fit and cut my intake for proper fitment if necessary. I'm using my 428 eagle crank and rods. It comes out to about 421 ci I think.

I plan on backing from just racing to a strip and strip mode. So im trying to put more reliability in the engine for street use. That's  why I'm thinking of going with these pistons. Yes, they are heavier and as you stated, out dated ring sizes but they're good enough for what I want to do. Thanks

The price is good and the only time my car goes over 6500 is when running 1/4 mile. I'll mention them to my machinist and see what he thinks. Thanks

Found some L2291 with coated sides and rings for about 350. Good for 6500+ rpm and 150 shot of nitrous.

Looking for suggestions on .040 forged pistons. Would like to keep the compression where I can run pump gas or mix half and half. Thanks

X2 on Innovators West. Been using one for years with no issues.
