FE Technical Forum / Re: Need help on ignition problem
« on: September 16, 2018, 06:44:29 PM »
Thanks to all for your comments.  I have been working when time permitted on this problem all week.  In the fifteen years I have had the car I never have been this stumped .  I have checked and double checked wiring: both visually for routing and solid connections and with a V.O.M. for continuity and voltage.  With respect to battery voltage the battery is fully charged and connected to a trickle charger.  I have digital voltmeters at the battery and on the dashboard and both show 13 to 14 volts.  There is "0" gauge welding cable connecting the battery from the trunk to a busbar for the hot positive connections and the negative ground is solidly connected to the engine block with a 3/8' copper stud.  Any extension of the wiring has been done with the MSD recommended 12 ga. for the black and red power wires and 16 ga..  I get 600 ohms resistance through the distributor magnetic pickup which is within the 500 - 700 ohms" recommended by MSD.  I ran out of time today to do more testing but will try and do dome tomorrow.  I am using the MSD website https://www.holley.com/support/troubleshooting_techniques/   as a guide and will make sure I have run every test I can to track down the problem.
Thanks again to everyone that has responded to me original post.

FE Technical Forum / Need help on ignition problem
« on: September 12, 2018, 09:24:10 PM »
I put on a new MSD6AL box,  MSD billet distributor, and a Summit Racing (SUM-850615) High Output Ignition Coil and have been trying for three weeks to get the Galaxie started. I'm stumped but I am pretty sure it is an ignition problem.  When I turn over the motor I get one or two good sparks on  #1 plug and then no spark.  I have checked all of the wiring, spark test the box, get good lights at startup on the MSD box but no change. I suspected the coil and checked electrical resistance and got good 40,000 Ohms on the primary but only 328,000 ohms on the secondary which seems low. However I swapped out the coile with another coil that had about 400,000 ohms on the secondary and still the same. I had the light silver springs and the "black-heavy" bushing. in the distributor but changed them to the two "light blue" springs and still same problem.

If you can give me any information on what the problem is and how to solve it I would be grateful.  I sure hope to make at least a few passes this season but I'm running out of good weather.

FE Technical Forum / Shims under Dove rocker arm stands?
« on: August 22, 2018, 03:52:04 AM »
I replaced the stock Dove rocker arm adjusting screws with Smith Brothers screws since the Smith Brothers have a fully spherical ball and more rugged Allen head.  Now I do not have enough room to back off the screws to get enough lash adjustment.  I assume I either need to buy shorter pushrods (expensive) or put shims under the Dove rocker stands. Does anyone have experience with shimming Dove rocker stands?

Larry,

Nope, I did not get the car running.  Its still in the trailer and I have not had a chance ( a lot of bad weather here) yet.

I've had a yellow top in my Galaxie NSS car for over 10 years.  When I bought an enclosed trailer two years ago I put it in the trailer for the lights and winch.  Still working fine.  I bought a new red top for the race car and so far so good with it.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Problem with torque converter threads
« on: April 18, 2018, 08:48:12 AM »
Yes the hole in my flexplate that corresponds to the torque converter tab is a 7/16" hole and your torque converter tab is drilled/tapped for a 3/8" bolt.  This is the same converter I have run for years.  I just wanted them to redo the stall and put in a new sprag.  They are claiming they did not change the cover but I do not know now else the holles could be different .  They have offered to drill and retap the holes.  I checked with Joel Rabe and he thinks they did use a new cover.  Joel thought it would be OK to redrill and tap the holes to 7/16".

Its still a big PITA to have to pull the converter out drive 40 miles to the converter shop to drop it off  and pick it up.  Lesson learned.

FE Technical Forum / Problem with torque converter threads
« on: April 18, 2018, 04:07:26 AM »
I am pushing hard to get the car ready for Beaver Springs and the good news is I got the motor back into the Galaxie yesterday.  The bad news is I am having a problem with the torque converter.

The issue is the tabs are drilled and tapped for a 3/8-24 bolt on the converter I had rebuilt for the new C4 trans. The threads were originally tapped with a 7/16-20 bolt.

The quick fix would be to just get a set of 3/8-24 bolts but I contacted ARP and learned that the 7/16-20 bolts that were in the converter I had rebuilt are very common.  They are ARP part #200-2902.  They are described on the package as "Chevy & Ford Flex plate bolt kit".   The ARP rep. told me the only flexplate bolts they sell that have a 3/8-24 thread is their part number 206-2802 and they don't sell many of them.  They are almost twice the price of the 7/16-20 bolts, $30.31 versus $19.48 for the 7/16-20.  They are longer and I am not sure they will have the correct head flange to work with my flex plate.  I have ordered a set and I should have them tomorrow to compare to the 7/16-20 bolts.  I will have to check to make sure the small flange under the bolt head that mates to the ATI flexplate is a match.  If they match would the smaller diameter be sufficient for the torque.

The shop that did the rebuild advised to re-drill and tap the 3/8-24 holes to 7/16-24.  Although it will solve the mounting problem, I am concerned that the problem occured in the first place. Do you guys remember what threads are on your converters?  Is anyone running a converter with a 3/8-24 bolt  I am very leery about risking my motor and the new $3,000 transmission unless I can be sure the converter is a match.

Thanks.  I have to go "down" since the ball end of the adjusting nut will not clear the hole in the rocker.  I did finally get it to move bu using two jam nuts but it was a challenge.

I'm rushing to get my car ready for the FE Reunion and hit a snag.  I n adjusting the valve lash on my Dove rockers I found one of the adjusting nuts is cracked and the 5/32" allen key won't turn it.  Has anybody run into this and know a fix?  I bought three new rockers from Dove about a year ago and they have 1/8" female hex so I believe the cracking of the 5/32" has been a problem. I tried heating it with a hot air gun and that doesn't help.  I'd welcome any ideas.  I attached a picture file and the crack can be seen on the left side.

FE Technical Forum / Trans cooling for C4 how to plumb it?
« on: April 01, 2018, 02:31:19 PM »
I want to make sure my new C4 and converter don't run too hot so I bought a Derale "Electra-Cool" unit.  I went on line to get some opinions on where to plumb into my car. I found a lot of opinions but no clear consensus on which of these options works best.
1. Don't use the engine radiator cooler ( my Ron  Davis radiator has one ), just use the Derale.
2. Route the fluid from the trans to the radiator cooler first then through the Derle cooler with its fan running continuously.
3. Route the fluid from the Derle cooler ( either with or without the fan running ) first then through the engine radiator cooler.

I am leaning with the #2 option and put a thermostat switch on the Derale to turn on the fan at about 210 degrees.

If anyone is running an electric fan trans cooler in conjunction with the car radiator cooler in their drag car and can share experience please let me know.

Thanks.  I'm glad I have the Victor Reinz.  Ironically I have it  because Rock Auto had a closeout on FE parts and the gaskets were one of the items I picked up.  My wife sometimes accuses me or being  hoarder but occasionally something from my "hoard" of FE parts works out .

FE Technical Forum / Looking for some advice on intake gasket
« on: March 12, 2018, 12:40:10 PM »
I know the subject has been covered a lot but I am still looking for some input on intake manifold gaskets.  I am installing a port matched Edelbrock Victor manifold with Edelbrock heads.  Here's my choices:

I have a new in the package a set of Victor Reinz #MS15166X

I also have a new set of Fel-Pro 90145

Finally I have no problem buying another brand or spec. set of gaskets if they would be better than either of the above.

Thanks in advance if any comments and help on this.
