427 Cobra drag car
« on: May 04, 2016, 12:22:21 AM »
I ran across this photo on the internet and I just thought it was so cool it needed to be shared here. So much neat period stuff in this picture - trophy's on the wall, all the test equipment, the chassis dyno - and yes a real 427 Cobra drag car. This is CSX 3159 which was purchased new by Clem Hoppe in July of 1966 and brought to Joel Rosen at Motion Performance to turn into a drag car. The original motor was pulled and a built 427 High Riser was installed. The car set many records and was the subject of a few magazine articles back in the day. The car went through a couple subsequent owners, losing some of it's racing heritage, but thankfully was restored back to as raced condition, including the 427 High Riser, by then owner Tony Conover. It's currently owned by someone else and has been featured in some recent magazines. This had to have just been a ball to race back in the day.

Cool picture, Kevin, thanks for posting it.  I have never seen a roll bar like that one; definitely not like a traditional Cobra roll bar, and doesn't look like it would do much good LOL!  I guess the safety rules were a little looser back then...

I think Jay should build a replica of this for Drag Week. Could you imagine Jay's Cammer in a Cobra? It would be funny to watch Jay and Joel riding in it. Neither would fit. LOL.

Yeah reminds me of the early 80s we use to race cars in front of the shop. Those were the days for me at least I know a lot of you guys might have been 10 years earlier which were even better

One of the people behind its build is Alex Denysenko.Sadly,he passed away a few weeks back.
You find some cool stuff Kevin.

I envision that being a cross between Gumball Rally and Two Lane Blacktop with a bit of It's a Mad Mad Mad World thrown in LOL.

Unfortunately, anything but an original Cobra will be put into the Unlimited class at Drag Week.  I was seriously considering a Daytona coupe replica with an SOHC before I found that out...

Jay, I believe that is an optical illusion, it looks like he is sitting on the door jamb and they are discussing a solution to something.  Joe-JDC

I don't know, Joe, it doesn't seem like you'd be able to see the steering wheel through the middle of the roll bar from that angle, if the roll bar was in the normal position behind the driver...

Jay's correct as they very strangely put that bar right in the middle as I've seen other pics of that car.

There used to be a 57 vetted that ran in a Super Stock modified class out here in the Pacific NW a few years back. He had a destroked 427 with twin dominators and a Jericho 4 speed. All 4 tires would come off the ground when he would do a dry hop after his burnout.
I can only dream how a 427 cobra would be with a Blair Patrick Super Stock 427.
