Electric water pump question... sizing

How many gpm do you really need in a street car/race car application. I have been looking at the 55gpm units but they all pose a clearance problem in my application. Then I looked at one from Moroso that is almost 2" shorter and would fit but it is rated at 36gpm. Is that enough for and engine that is around 650+ hp?

I ran a Moroso water pump on a big block chevrolet that made 700hp. I had to install a fairly small restrictor (3/4”) in the t-stat housing to slow the water down. It was a 13:1 engine, the only time I had problems was back to back runs in August, it never overheated, just wouldn’t stay as cool as I wanted it. Granted this was a Chevrolet, but maybe it would help.

Years ago I called Meziere about this, told them I had a 700 HP FE engine and asked which of their electric water pumps would be suitable for street use.  They told me that their standard FE pumps, 37 and 42 gpm, would not be enough for my application, and that I should use one of their remote 55 gpm units.  I ended up just going with a mechanical pump on that engine for Drag Week 2005, because I didn't want to mess with a remote pump

A couple years later I called Meziere again, hoping something had changed, but basically got the same story.  That is what got me going on designing and building the adapters to use the CVR 55 gpm pump on FEs.  That pump has proven to be perfectly capable of cooling a big, high horsepower engine on the street.

I think for track use only any of the smaller pumps would work, but I'd lean towards a 55 gpm unit if you have 650+ HP and want to cool reliably on the street.

I get that they’re different completely, I just was thinking the coolant had to be slowed down to scavenge heat from the heads. thinking about the size of big block chevy heads, and size/capacity of the water jackets, it is probably a poor comparison.

Not that far off, the spacing between a BBC and FE is the same the bolt holes are at different angles, a simple adapter and hoses allows a BBC to be used.
The one on my old TP is a BBC aluminum pump ran cool with a big cross flow radiator ran hot with a tiny Scirocco radiator.

     But, what they're not talking about is the fact that their pumps don't build sufficient "head-pressure" as is intended in the O.E.'s original intention for proper cooling system function!         

     And this is what the required effect intention of restricting the water flow, not for the purpose of actually limiting the flow volume or rate of flow, and yes this does happen but as an unappreciated effect, despite popular belief.
