Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: jegs/summitt rant (not me, but)

I emailed PA a couple of months ago and they did not respond?

I haven’t tried myself, but as is the case with many companies since 2020, I’ve seen a few comments on the internet of PA being hard to get ahold of, so you’re probably not alone there. In the past Performance Automatic has had a booth at the big PRI (Performance Racing Industry) trade show that happens in December. Jay & I haven’t gone the last couple years, so I don’t know if they were there last year, maybe if someone attends this year they can check if PA has a booth? Unfortunately many of these small companies have had to do a major downsize if they can’t get the raw product to sell, or enough good & consistent employees.

Here is an actual 1968 Ford Motor Company publication. All the parts & tech inside are for the FE engine. That should settle the discussion.

Wish i'd run into Kevin there. I asked the TFS guy too and he said the same.

Not a lot of FE's there this year but a few. I will make a SEMA post.

Yeah, too bad I didn’t know you were going this year, I’d have certainly said hi. I only had two days open to go though SEMA, Tuesday & Wednesday, so as others have said in the past, no way to see everything in just that little time.

I got the opportunity to attend the SEMA show in Las Vegas this year, I stopped at the Trick Flow booth and asked about the status of their FE heads & intakes. They told me that they have NO intention of discontinuing the FE heads, they confirmed the issues they have been battling are the same foundry issues Jay has told us he had the last couple years. They have increased the amount of foundries they are working with, but that often requires new tooling being made to accommodate the new foundry, and that of course takes more time, something Jay has also mentioned he has had to deal with. They think they are back on track, but of course still so far behind it will be a while until inventory builds up to a point that the stuff is in stock on a regular basis. Talking to them I could tell they are as frustrated as consumers are. As far as the intake manifolds, it’s the same situation. They had their FE 2-4 bbl Tunnel Wedge copy on display, and also confirmed they are very happy with the sales on that, when they can get them of course. I took the opportunity to let them know to try and get their 1-4 bbl single plane back in production too, that it had lots of fans, and with the Edelbrock Victor hard to find now too it would be nice to have some option available. They told me part of the reason they sometimes ask retailers to mark the intakes as not available or take them off their websites periodically is so consumers aren’t ordering them, and being charged with funds or deposits held for long periods, when they are still unsure exactly when they can get them delivered.

I guess I spoke too soon

such adapter does exist after doing a quick search .
but its made by FEPower.net

Yes, FE Power is the forum you are on  ;D, run by Jay Brown. But as pointed out by Mark, there were multiple versions before, both commercial and custom one offs by racers.

With that part # and description it sounds like it might be a FE Power intake adapter, not Ford Power Parts?

Getting the little “U” shaped clip out that holds the advance/breaker cam in place is what I find the tricky operation, especially if you have to pull it out a few times to get everything as you want it. Unfortunately I don’t know any special tool or trick for that, maybe someone has a good tip or technique. Also if anyone has a source for any new clips, I had my dealer buddy go though Fords obsolete parts locator many many years ago to find a couple NOS ones, doubtful you’d find any now, which means raiding old distributors to replace a lost or mangled one.

I have a BlueBird Kaydee too, love it. Same hoist a lot of rental shops have. It wasn’t cheap though. If you look around though sometimes you can find a used one for sale. Unfortunately I can’t take a “reach” measurement at the moment.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: NHRA Rule question
« on: October 03, 2023, 12:27:05 AM »
Like Mike said, ET thresholds effect what safety requirements are applicable. Concerning seat belts, if you are running slower than 11.99 ETs, your stock or expired SFI belts are OK, but if quicker than that, yes, you need to replace the 5 point safety harnesses every 2 years, unless you are able to have the original manufacturer reweb them, and put on new SFI tags...

I’m sure just an oversight by Rory, but the seat belt rule changed to 11.49 a few years ago. Just a FYI.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: Scams
« on: September 28, 2023, 09:50:07 PM »
Yes, it’s epidemic at the moment. Moderators are trying to keep up with it, but it’s so prevalent right now it’s hard to keep up. Personally I think there’s a few more rules each page could institute to help, but then they need to take a firm stance on enforcement. Unfortunately whenever these scam ads get posted a few people immediately comment they are interested, and message the poster, and obviously haven’t stopped for a minute to even do a quick scan of the scammers profile. The buyers need to be much more careful too. But people are trying to jump on a good deal.

Going forward, it might be a good idea to put something identifying in your pictures? maybe not necessarily personal info, but a logo, watermark, mascot, etc. Could help your friends spot the stolen pictures easier on the internet. Just a thought.

I made a post recently when I spotted some of Mean Gene’s pictures stolen and being used in a scam ad, the more of our eyes watching the better.

Sadly, since there isn’t any real penalties or repercussions when they get caught at this they often just create another fake profile and try again, sometimes even the same day.

Buyers need to really be careful about payment methods too, along with not using PayPal “Friends & Family”, unless you REALLY know the seller, research other payment methods before using, some of the other new forms the scammer will try to get someone to use have no recourse if the seller scams you.

I’ll add too, before buying anything from a particular Facebook page, try to get a feel if it’s being actively moderated, some moderators & page owners are very hands on, others aren’t being watched at all. It’s pretty easy on any Facebook page to see who the Moderators are, get to know their names, and watch if they are commenting on their page daily, those pages have a better chance of weeding out the scammers.

The Viton tipped needle & seats are the typical standard needle & seat the common Holley carbs come with, and come in the Holley renew kits, so yes they are fine for street use. Holley recommends the steel inlet needle & seats for “exotic” fuels, like alcohol, etc., but I have used them with race gas without an issue.

You didn’t specify exactly which 600 cfm you have, but for the common List 1850 the original needle & seats are Holley part # 6-506, and have a .097” orifice size. There are numerous versions of a 600 cfm Holley, so a good idea to double check your model.

The genuine Holley needles & seats are not cheap if bought individually, for just a little more $ you can buy the whole rebuild kit, than what a pair will cost, just FYI.

Our member Drew at Air-Fuel-Spark is currently home and in the shop rebuilding carbs, he is selling his own custom rebuild kits & parts, you might want to check with him too.

There was a company out there at one time doing Cougar fastback conversions using the Torino fastback roofs. I remember seeing a picture someone had of the place with a stack of cut-off roofs ready to go. Maybe someone remembers the outfits name. I’ve seen a couple done with the Mustang roofs like this one in the past too.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Carb questions

Thanks to both of you, and so far- agreed.
And my vague description of "cleaning and freshening it up" I did mean a soft parts kit.

My intention is to return to the original jetting to start- per the Holley specs. ("out of the box wouldn't specifically apply, as I got it used sometime in the 70's)

As I recall it, the general consensus (and my own experiences) left me inclined to think "universal" models were often jetted safe, and I often ended up leaning them out 1 or 2 jet sizes. While OE specific models were often closer.
This is a (I think its 33100?) that research describes being originally used on a 69' Chebby 396, not that it means anything.

Another related question- When I last messed with this I was planning a track day and wanted to try a 1" spacer. I have since decided that was likely either a mistake or wasted effort on this dual plane manifold and not likely to give the slight top end MPH bump I might have hoped for.
When setting that up, I recall checking the throttle for fully opening at WOT. Not paying close attention, I made an adjustment that as it turns out- causes my lead foot to open the throttle past WOT by perhaps 15% or so, as there is no real built in stop at full open.
Is it common to acquire or fabricate something for this condition?

BTW, it may be common knowledge to others, but on these vac secondary carbs, it is quite possible that opening the primaries 115% and having the secondaries open fully the link rod can drop down in its slot and upon throttle release, jam the secondaries wide open.
Guess how I know...

Holley has made at least a dozen versions of the “3310”, they are up to at least 3310-11 so far, plus more sub variants. The early ones had a secondary metering block, then Holley went to secondary metering plates, without a power valve. Add into that differences between down leg boosters & straight leg, internal passage differences, air bleed changes, etc. Always best to be sure of the exact version you have. And of course only the original version with date codes during car production were used on the actual Ch**y applications, so the vast majority, even of the early ones were just aftermarket.

Any 3310 SHOULD have a positive stop to keep from going past full throttle. I’ve included a picture showing the arm and how it contacts the base. Check yours over carefully - it maybe has been modified, or is broken. But that could be very dangerous. Replacement throttle arms are available if there’s a problem with yours. You can get add-on mechanical throttle stops too, I think Moroso still makes one. They’re not a bad idea to keep from bending/breaking the throttle arm on the carb. We use them sometimes when bracket racing to adjust ET, but they’re not a bad idea just from the safety aspect.
