FE Technical Forum / fe main girdle
« on: September 28, 2014, 01:50:25 AM »
I was wondering if anyone was running a main girdle on their fe. I saw one listed on eBay that looked like a good value for what you get. Description says minor machining to the caps is required and line hone is recommended. Would the pan rail need to be machined flat as well?  Seems like it would keep the caps from moving around. Its probably not as strong as cross bolting but should be easier and cheaper.

FE Technical Forum / leaking needle and seat
« on: July 11, 2014, 08:17:54 AM »
I keep on having problems with the needle and seat leaking on my fastback. When I hit the pump fuel shoots up out of the vent tube, maybe half the time. Also seems to be running rich. Pulled it out to look at it and clean it. Looks perfect. This is the third set I've replaced. They are the viton tipped needle. Carb is 3 circuit 1050 dominator built by Bigs Performance. Hp 150 electric pump, aeromotive regulator set at 7 psi, -8 line, aluminum fuel cell, filter after the pump. Wondering if I should try a set of stainless steel needle and seats? Any help is appreciated.

After breaking my rear end again, >:( I upgraded to a yukon aluminum third member and 4.56 gears. We took it out on our local cruise night and we brought our 14 month girl along for the ride. My wife thought the car was waaayyyy too loud for the baby but you guys can decide 8)

The 12 to 1 390 in my fairlane started running like crap last year. Popping through the Carb and running rich. Chalked it up to Carb and parked it. Yesterday we started diagnosing. Started with compression test. Cylinders 5,7,8 were 235 to 240 psi. They rest were 190 to 210,  low for that engine, as it was 245 to 250 new. So we hooked up air to the chambers and the low psi chambers leaked like a seive into the intake. So three hours later the engine is sitting in the run stand with the heads off. Lotta crud on the valves for a two year old engine. Only thing is the intake gasket looked a little saturated and may have been weeping. I'm going to disassemble heads clean them up and lap the valves in by hand and check the guides and look for bent valves. The heads are ported dove f-5 aluminum, stainless race valves, viton seals. Anyone seen this before? Possible causes? Anything to look for?

FE Technical Forum / leaking intake and exhaust manifold
« on: March 18, 2014, 10:30:41 AM »
Looking for some input guys. I picked up a 74 f100 390 2 bbl c6. The intake is leaking so bad it must be fixed. I just hate to pull it off just to reseal it. I have a spare blue thunder intake and 600 Holley not being used. Would the swap hurt performance? Also the manifolds leak so I was going to install a set of Shortie headers I'm not using. I know their not the best header but should easily support my power goal. The truck weighs 4150 on the scale and I'm guessing has 3.00 gears.  I'm not wanting to swap cams yet until I put more miles on it. If the cam swap is a must I'd do it too, looking for more mileage than power.

Picked up a new project the other day. It supposedly had a 390 2bbl but when I drove it home spitting and sputtering  I was guessing it's a 360. Points were good, dwell was off, wrong plugs and wires. Fixed that stuff as well as curved the dizzy and she runs way way better. The truck goes right down the road and rides extremely nice. The a/c pump is locked up but everything else is there. Also a small exhaust manifold leak and a huge intake leak. Also its tough to tell a 360 from a 390 without taking them apart so we found tdc with the plugs out stuck a welding rod in and turned it over by hand till it stopped. Got 3.82 on my caliper so its gotta be a 390!  My plan for the truck, for now..... swap intakes, install a set of shorties that I have from the run stand, fix a few other smalls, and drive the heck out of it. I'll post some photos but I'm having a heck of a time with this 128 size limit thing.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / drag race commercial

Anyone see the Lucas oil commercial with the granny driving a 72 ish Ltd that has to be 390 powered? During nhra eliminations on sunday they had her drag racing who I thought was Frank Manzo and put him on the trailer! Hilarious. I can't find that version anywhere.

After winning the championship last year and crushing the competition this weekend you gotta wonder if ford is doing the right thing by pulling out of the nhra after 2014. Also congrats to Robert Pond for doing GREAT this weekend as well. I heard his FE scared many into redlighting 8)

FE Technical Forum / truck 390
« on: October 31, 2013, 11:02:13 AM »
A guy in our group bought a 390 from a local guy who is supposed to be the best fe guy around. It was put in his 76 f-250 4x4 4spd. Truck has 37" military oz tires. The motor was built for this truck. After driving it for a thousand miles he was complaining about power and mileage. After more break in he pulled my 18 ft trailer with 78 150  on a 100 mile trip. He came back furious. Said the truck was overheating and pinging like crazy. We pulled it in and checked timing which was 18 initial and 38 total. Turned it down and didn't help. Truck was missing also so we did compression test all 170. No bent push rods. Checked plugs and pretty black. Number 8 looks like antifreeze. New plugs then threw in 5 gal 110 VP and runs little better. After a falling out with his engine guy we finally found out engine specs. .30 over 390, flat tops, performer can and intake, 750 Carb, manifolds. I did the math and I'm thinking it's got about 10.7 to one. Can we bleed this off with bigger cam? Also might pull heads,d-2, and unshroud valves and smooth chamber, maybe try to take a little extra? He would like to leave bottom alone if possible as cost is an issue. We do have performer rpm to put on but he is worried about runner mismatch. The truck is mostly a driver but will pull occasionally. It has OK low end but no top end. You help would be much appreciated.
