I finally have my fresh 428 fired up and it runs great, but smokes like crazy after it hits about 190 or so.
I broke the hyd tappet cam in for 10 mins, repaired a fuel leak and broke it in for 15 minutes more and it never got past 175. The Right Stuff oozed out of the back of the intake at 25 minutes of run time and I called it a day.
This week, I replaced the intake gaskets with Edelbrock gaskets and used the GM sealant for the end seals and yesterday I took it for a ride to break in the rings. I followed the Hastings procedure of slow down to 30mph and punch it 50 mph 10 times. Everything went well, so I took it for ride. Temp got to 190 and all hell broke loose. The kind of blue smoke you can taste started pouring out of the left side.
Pulled the plugs an they all look good except number 6, which is oily, but still firing.
The intake, heads and block were all working together fine the last time they were bolted together and no machine work was performed that would change anything.
Compression tested 130-150 with number 6 being the highest cylinder!
Vacuum is steady
Pulled the valve cover and rockers and did a visual on the intake gasket on number 6 and it looks good, but I can't see the bottom of it.
Today I warmed up to 180,retorqued the intake and took it for a ride. It is mild in Reno right now so it took about 20 minutes to get it up to 190 and then all hell broke loose again. It seems to smoke more at idle then at speed.
I'm at a loss what the heck is wrong with it,any help would be appreciated!

FE Technical Forum / Truck cam/ Flat Tappet Break In
« on: February 28, 2014, 12:48:21 PM »
My plan has been to pull the 428 of of my 76 F-250 and put it in my 58 Fairlane 500 and build a a basic 390, no stroker, aluminum heads EFI etc. for the truck.
We have a .030 390 block, C4 AE heads? (they are not right in front of me) Edelbrock Performer, 600 AFB, Mallory Unilite, Hedman Long Tube Hedders with 2 1/2 dual exhaust. Truck is 76 F-250 4X4 4 speed , 4.11 gears and 36 inch tires. Truck will be a daily driver for my son so gas mileage is a concern. I figure the Performer limits the performance , but I think it will be fine for what we are planning.
I'm leaning toward the Comp Cam 268H cam, but a 270H may give up a little power for a little mileage?
Any thoughts on my choices? any other suggestions?

I have the 428 almost ready to go for my 58 Fairlane and this 390 should not take too long, which means I will be breaking in 2 hydraulic flat tappet cams in the near future.. I already have some Brad Penn break in oil. Do I need an additive?

I'm not a C-6 expert but I worked with Broader when I put mine together and he was very helpful and fairly prics.Broader's
Stage 5 shift kit shifts very firm. Shift kit is $75.00 and a modified valve body with a shift kit is $150. I would recommend spending the extra $75 bucks for the whole valve body.

The Early Bronco Roadsters are rare indeed, only about 5000 produced in 66-68. The survival rate for them is awfully low due to the lack of a top and a rough life on the job.
There used to be a couple of Sand Drag Broncos around here that had a similar look to the project pictured, but I have never seen an asphalt drag Bronco.....very cool
I have a 68 Bronco, but it's a hardtop version. I used to run the Rubicon and other nasty trails with it.
The Bronco guys are just as fanatical as FE guys and the Bronco- Jeep rivalry is just as intense as the Ford - Chevy battle!!

FE Technical Forum / Rocker Shaft Spacer Clearance
« on: February 08, 2014, 10:58:29 PM »
I putting Precision Oil Pump end stands and Dove spacers on  Sealed Power stock replacement rocker shafts. I'm using stock non adjustable rockers and stock rocker stands in the middle of the shafts.
What clearance should I shoot for on the rockers contained in the end stands?
The rockers in the "field"?

It looks like the Sealed Power rocker shafts have about half the amount of oil hole capacity as the stock shafts, which is probably an improvement over FoMoCo shafts..

I did my own C-6 with a Badshoe video, a factory shop manual and Broader 500 HP rebuild kit. So far so good!!

Awesome piece of history!!

Instead of Buyer Beware how about calling it Vendor Feedback?
I can start it with positive feedback on Precision Oil Pumps and RobbMc.
Both were very helpful and provided quality products in a timely manner.
I even tried to buy more parts than I needed from POP for my fairly mild build and they convinced me to run my stock parts!

I think Ford used the NP 435 from 69-79 and the T-18 from 65-85.
