Pent Roof Valve Cover ID

How can you tell repop valve covers from originals ?  I have a set off the 428 I bought, it has a '67  S code intake so I'm suspicious these came from the same car.    they have no numbers or markings of any kind if that means anything. 

mine are in better shape but they're identical to these.

Those actually aren't pentroof covers, but they are like the chrome covers that came on some 428CJ engines.  My original set has some numbers stamped into the top side of the covers, between the oil hole and the end of the cover.  Both covers have this stamping; doesn't look like a date code but I'm not sure what the numbers/letters indicate.  I would imagine that most, if not all, of the Ford covers have this stamping, but I haven't seen enough of them to know for sure...

Most of the CJs I had were all aluminum and topped finned. I acquired a set of "snake" covers a couple of yrs ago. Both have been repoped  I have seen some of the chromed steel ones, but I thought they were a 428 T-Bird item. Never seen them repoped painted steel or chrome.

Those aren't CJ, not sure what those came on, but I have seen a lot of those flat top chrome covers over the years.   CJs came with either chrome Power by Ford, finned alum no letters, or lettered finned alum.

However, as stated before, definitely not Pentroofs, Pentroofs are the big ones

A friend of mine has a '66 and a '67, both original R-Code Fairlanes.  The '66 has chrome tall pentroof covers and the '67 has chrome "Power by Ford" covers.  The PbF covers are of course a rounded design, except where the breather or PCV grommet is installed.  The covers shown in this EBay ad are '65-'66 non-427 covers IMO.

I can't find where ones like this were reproduced either.  they're very heavy so I'm going to assume they're OEM for something.    if they're actual Ford parts I think I'll use them  it's not like the 428 in my '76 highboy will ever be " correct "  anyway.

I have only ever seen those on 66/67 390 Fairlanes.Mustangs got chrome powered by Ford.The first CJ's got chrome PBF covers before switching to the cast aluminum covers..As far as I know the chrome pentroofs were only used on the mid 60's 427 cars....
It is possible the ones pictured could have been installed on early 67 Mustang/Cougars but I am not a expert...

Those were original for 66 Fairlane 390GT engines (most anyway). They are too short to clear most adjustable rocker arms.  The valve cover first appeared in 65 I think, and was used on passenger car/truck FE applications in 65 and 66, but painted instead of chrome (black for 65, blue for 66).  67 was the introduction of the PBF round top covers.  Some Cyclone GT engines has the same valve cover with a cast aluminum plaque that read "Cyclone 390" or something like that.

Pentroof covers are much taller.  Original 427 car valve covers didn't have breathers.  Marine valve covers did have breathers.

I have seen that valve cover on a 67 mustang GT coupe back when it would have been around 5 years old.
It's possible but doubtful that anyone would have changed the valve covers at that time.
The car was completely stock, stock wheels, and everything else.
My friend still has them I believe.

Not an expert but I consider myself "knowledgeable"  about FE VC's
I've got 3 or 4 sets of those but don't recall any being chromed, I'd have to check.
Here are pictures of the VJ Covers and samples of 406-427 Chromed Pent roofs. From what I understand the difference from 406 to 427 might have only been the decal.

The CJ covers are on the  left in the finned aluminum photo (center a few of my Cal Custom) Cobra covers and Edel. on the right.

But if we are speculating... wasn't there a chrome dress up package for the 7 Litre that used these valve covers, a chromed master cylinder cap and rad cap?

A builder told me that the fadded, cheap looking chrome was oem Ford and the knock offs or re chrome were brilliant like the EBay ad.

The large hole is right side only and the twist in is the left. The left side large round hole was for either road draft or PCV with a large grommet. As for the painted valve covers in stock form they do not clear oem adjustable rockers as mentioned.

Richard, did those overlap into 64 and 67?
