FE Technical Forum / Re: Repair or Replace?

PRW stands will fit Harland Sharp rockers and shafts. I believe that I removed a small amount of shim under the stands because the rockers have slightly different architecture. Every setup is different so you must check. If you are able, install two ten lb. springs install two rockers and roll the engine through the valve event to check geometry. Something that I forgot to mention is you may need to change to a shorter pushrod length (as I did). Also you don't want the adjusters in the rockers to extend more than a few threads. Just go step by step.

I pulled the PRW rockers out before they gave trouble. Replaced the rockers & shafts with Harland Sharp parts and used the PRW stands and shims (they do have shaft end supports). You may need to re shim your rocker stands to acquire correct rocker geometry. This is cost effective.

Yes, that does seem to be the conciseness.

Pretty much what I figured. Just weighing my options, found black magnetic matter on magnet drain plug, sort of like graphite in texture, haven't opened filter yet.
Fresh engine, solid flat tappet, low pressure springs, zinc, proper brake in RPM, all I could think of. If I have lobe-lifter degradation will I find larger particles in the filter? Will check tappet lash for extra clearance indicating wear.

Can a solid roller lifter run in a solid lifter 427 block? How about a bushed lifter?

Does cryogenic treating measurably change rockwell hardness in any metal found in an engine or transmission?

The stock spacer is 4-hole, would that make any difference with the Streetmaster open plenum?
My impression after reading Jay's book is that single plane intakes like an open spacer.

Do you mean with the tighter clearance and the seal giving less oil?
Yes

Seems I have noticed a trend toward closer stem to guide clearance of late. Could this, in combination with modern valve seals be a contributing factor?

Is their a sequential 5 or 6 speed box that is adaptable to the FE?

I would add that you might want to educate yourself about various rod bolts offered. And use bolt stretch method when torquing.

I have visions of aluminum & titanium fasteners everyware possible. Would weight high in the car be a traction, or more correctly, a weight transfer aid?

Is it possible the reason for more oil pressure without the vacuum pump is that the vacuum increases the size of the air bubbles that the oil pump must compress before it can actually pump oil?

Would slightly smaller dia. valves alleviate the valve clipping problem?

Slightly off topic but since cam bearing restriction came up, ironically the Y block engines used a restriction at the cam bearing to meter oil to the rockers. They tended to plug up and the overhead oiler kit was born. External copper tubing through the valve cover and attached to the rocker assy. When I built a 312 for my dad's '57 T-Bird I removed the restriction at the cam bearing and used the tried and true Holley jet under the rocker stand method!! Never plugged up.
