Paint Marks on Back of Block
« on: January 30, 2020, 09:14:41 PM »
Hey guys, another "just curious" question. What do the paint marks on the back of the block signify? Behind the flexplate/flywheel area.
My 410 has what almost looks like a word but not quite.

Thanks.

The only thing I have ever seen regarding the paint marks was for the 427 blocks, and likely was for a specific period in time. I think the original Ford document of this has been posted on the old FE Forum. I haven’t seen anything applying to regular FE’s.

Looks like sometime in the past someone wrote needs cleaning on the block before assembly.  Not a factory mark.  I have seen many shops use such writing to keep track of needs for a particular item.  Just an observation.  Joe-JDC

Thanks for the reply, Joe.
This engine was all factory Ford when I disassembled it. Standard bore, Ford pistons, standard Ford bearings--just as Ford sent it out the door in '67.
I'm fairly certain the only person who has been inside this thing since new is me.

410bruce, I studied your pictures and it looks to me that the casting inspector saw what looked like a crack in the circle, He circled it and passed it down the line to another inspector who took more time to check it out and then passed it for machining, hence the different color marks.  The word could be  Clean or Check. Got to remember that things happened fast on the line.

Good call, GJCAT427. That seems very reasonable.

Gessford Machine had a 390 block with a swastika painted on the back of the block. I think some guys were having a little fun at the plant on that one.

Lol. Really? That's funny.
Back about 30 years or so when I was in my 20s, I worked at a chrome plating shop and we used to play pranks on each other. Well, one of the guys was going on a 5 hour road trip to the city. He had a '79 F-150 2wd with a Barden bumper on the rear. I made a stencil out of cardboard and spray painted a swastika on that bumper right before he cut out of work. It was at the perfect height so any car following him would have no chance of missing it. lol.

My son bought a house and when we teared down the Masonite from
the kitchen walls there was a drawing of a naked woman with a really
