347 semi budget stroker
« on: September 09, 2021, 01:49:45 AM »
The hot rod bug bit me again, I found a good late model roller cam 302 block on FB for a reasonable price.

Bought it last week and tore it down, block looks to be in excellent shape, no noticeable cylinder ridge, pistons popped right out. Didn’t see any signs of it having cracks or bulges from freezing, and it turned over easy once I got the heads off.

My long term goal for my 64.5 mustang will be a 363 stoker based on a dart or ford block, but since 347 stroker kits are cheap as dirt, I’ve got a hankering to throw together a hot little 347 for now, and maybe to keep around as a spare later.

My thought for now are a scat 9000 crank, scat I beam rods and a set of 4032 mahle flat tops.
Throw a set of AFR 195’s on it and use a 224-230 ish ( intake & .050 ) cam in it.
It’s a manual trans with 3.73 gears, no power brakes.

Wondering what suggestions or advice the great FE hive mind might have on that combo. Also, is there a good place to buy a rotating assembly ready to go?
The internet is chock full of kits, but don’t like ordering such things from just any old flea bay shop.

Thanks

Couple years ago I had Brent do a 347 for my restored 76 Bronco.  He used a scat stroker kit and a hydraulic roller set up like
yours.  Heads were Dart Pro 1's that I had stashed away along with an air gap intake.  He had to finish the heads since they were bare and
had a custom cam made.  I wasn't looking for a lot of hp just something nice for my Bronco. Also I had a recently rebuilt holley 600 that was done by Scott Perkins. Distributor was a custom curved duraspark.
We went to the dyno and it made 395hp on the first pull at 5500rpm.  Adjusted a couple things and next pull was over 400hp at 6000rpms..  I didn't have a bigger carb since I was trying to keep this thing in a budget so just for fun we put on a 2 in super sucker and it hit 415hp. The dyno operator said with a bigger carb it would have easily hit 425hp. The last pull with everything back to how it was going in to be run in the bronco was 402hp/409 tq.
I was really surprised how well this performed.  Wasn't expecting this kind of power..
You can get ahold of Brent and talk to him about getting a stroker kit and other stuff you need and I'd definitely have him spec you a cam.
Good luck

You can make the same or better horsepower with a set of AFR 165 CNC heads and be much more fun on the street.  The only reason to go to a 195 cc head is if you are going racing with the 363 SBF.  Joe-JDC

I built one about 15 years ago on a very strict budget. Used crank cut to 10/10 , Used H beam rods and forged pistons. Found a deal on some used X302 heads and a B roller cam. Finished , in the '66 Mustang , I had $1250 out of pocket. The car with a C4 and 4.30 gear with a 275 drag radial went 12.50s @ 111 with closed exhaust on pump gas. I normally ran a 3.50 gear and put 25,000 on the engine before returning the car back to stock and sending it "down under". Never had an issue. When I pulled it , I freshened it with a set of .040 over pistons and sold it to a friend with a '65 Falcon where it is to this day. Used parts aren't "always" trash and certainly made that one affordable. I kept the rpm limited to 6,000 in the 5 years I used it.

I was considering the 165 cc heads, especially after seeing how well they did on the engine masters 408 dyno test.
The reason I'm thinking about the 195's is just money, My thought was, while they are likely more head than the 347 can use, they will be just about right, ( with a little headroom ) for the 363.
Just swap them over.
