Title: An old Nascar Starliner...
Post by: jayb on July 24, 2019, 01:14:39 PM
I wouldn't normally post for sale ads here, but this is a very interesting and noteworthy car.  I have it on pretty good authority that this car was a NASCAR terror back in the day, dominating its class (Sportsman Modified).  One of our forum members has also told me that everything that appears in the ad is true.  If so, the car is a real piece of history, and may actually be worth the $1M asking price.  Had an FE for a while but is currently sporting a Chrysler Hemi.  I think its pretty cool...

So freaking cool.  And I thought Poteet's starliner at bonneville was my favorite...this could put that in contention...

Just an opinion, but it would be worth the $1 Million forecast if everyone kind of knew of the car, the driver or something.  I mean, David Pearson's 1969 Mercury or Petty's '70 'Bird would be in that range.  I think there are going to be a lot of disappointed soles when the hammer falls for a fraction of that 1mil.

For those that are on Facebook and want to know more, there is some discussion on this car on the Grand National History page.

thanks for posting that, very cool car with a great story behind it. Wonder how many more of the old NASCAR "Sportman" cars are tucked away, like maybe the Pontiac powered '56 Ford that won the sportsman race at Daytona in '62? Neat stuff. Like GerryP said, no-where NEAR a million dollar car, but some cool circle track history for sure.

I grew up about 20 miles from Rushford, MN in the 60’s and remember hearing stories about Ernie Tuff and his foray into NASCAR country. I was only 11 in 1964 but clearly remember hearing about him. Some of the stories are similar to what is in the CL post. The post kind of indicates NASCAR made some rules just for Ernie to make it a little harder for him compared to the Southern racers. I do remember hearing that some of the heavy hitters from the South referred to Ernie as “That dam farmer from Minnesota “.

A few years back Ernie brought the car up to a local cruise night at the Lakeview Drive In in Winona, MN. I wasn’t there but understood it was quite an event because of it being there.

The forum member that brought this to Jays attention is a good friend of mine and still lives near Rushford. He does know Earnie Tuff and would certainly vouch that the story and history is true. Could there be some embellishments..., probably, but most of the basic facts are real. It will be very interesting to see how this story ends.

Cool car Jay! Looks like the real McCoy as well. The value though is in the eye of the beholder as a true racer. I do hope he gets a ton of cash.

but Craigslist?

"Ernie Tuff has decided to take it to Barrett Jackson Auction in AZ. in January 2020. Since he doesn't own a computer or cell phone has asked me to place some 'initial ads' so people will know it is going to be up for sale (1st time ever) now and until he registers it for the auction in September. With all due respect, somebody took a dump in the engine compartment. ;)

This car has Joel Nystrom written all over it!  Just think, he could curry favor with Dr. Brown.  Strut his Hemi bonafides, and preserve some local history all in one transaction. He already has the genesis of a museum so i think this is an easy decision...
I like the car, but I would be surprised if it broke 100K at the auction. If you go to the NASCAR museum you barely see any cars of this era any more, and they are all Grand National cars.  Hope I am wrong..
