Sweet! Thanks for posting it. That is much better detail. I found the use of hemi pistons an intresting one, but I guess it makes sense to me. Exotic parts that are semi-readily available. I assume a bit cheaper and parts which have been tested, little R&D to get reliable proven parts. Nice approach. I was disappointed that they did not turn up the wick to see what it would do. Werb, any gonks for full boost? ;D

I must have missed the solid roller part in the article, I guess my reading comprehension sucks as well. It would certainly be nice to know more about the heads, but Werby's gonk shows that there isnt anything magical going on there. I was also surprised by the low rpms, I thought at first it was hyd roller cam, but with a solid and the large of a bump stick i agree it falls off suspiciously early.

FE Technical Forum / Magazine 431 build with 555 hp....

I came across this article from EPWI, see attached. It was given to me by a friend. It was just a standalone magazine for just this build, kind of a interesting way to promote your product. Like any magazine article it has misinformation, but it is not bad overall. Its a bit thin on details over the heads and camshaft, but the numbers are impressive for a 431. I do wonder if these were standard RPM heads or pro-ports. Either way not a cookie cutter recipe for getting 555hp out of a 390. :-) I do find it interesting as well that they choose a 4.125 crank over the more popular 4.25. I wonder if they have a surplus of those cranks to sell. :-)

FE Technical Forum / Re: Jay's valve covers
« on: July 08, 2018, 12:43:32 AM »
Hey Jay couldn’t you create a driver that fired when the engine did? Like a timing light but instead of flashing the timing light it fired the led(s) in the cover? We do this at work with centrifuges. We strobe  em and can adjust the frequency to visually stop the centrifuge so we can watch what happens in the g-field. Now that I think about it you’d probably want the driver to adjust it’s pulse frequency to match the rpm of the valve train. Then use the timing light idea to adjust the pulse frequency to change the pulse to match the rpms. Like manually adjusting the knob on a strobe to make the object visually freeze.

Created any shit for you here. I am sad to see you delete you posts and remove
What was valuable information for me. I had hoped to read it a few times to
Learn something new. In the interest of not losing what I posted in your soon to be deleted post I will paste my response here.

“Whoa! I wasn’t trying to start a fight with my comments. I am just thoroughly impressed with this combination. You are pulling some high hp out of those heads and out of 390 ci without turning high rpms. I have been on these forums since the mid 2000’s and I have seen a lot off 390 builds and track times. There is a reason people stroke, use power adders, aftermarket heads, rpms,
etc to get better numbers. I know the ss guys use a lot of attention to detail and have a lot of knowledge to get impressive numbers out of stock parts and parameters. That is really what I mean by black magic. It’s the tribal knowledge of a platform and the tricks of the trade.
Us regular folk who don’t do this for living can only hope to pick up some of this along the way so thank you for being so generous with sharing the details behind the build. I know a lot do not reveal all because for those that race it’s a competitive edge. What is the intent of this motor? Will it see strip duty?”

Shocker, a ford part number wrong in a book. Thanks guys this long block is making more sense.

Well there is no doubt it is a cast crank,  no $, no cross drill, and yes it’s the same stroke either way I am more curious because it’s an odd duck based on the casting number grooves mains and what the books show. I know they can be wrong but what it really is and more importantly what it is worth to other people is what I am trying to figure out. It’s part of a package deal and I am assessing the parts based on what I will do with them.

FE Technical Forum / C3AE-E crank question
« on: June 01, 2018, 12:40:13 AM »
I am looking at a crank with this casting number and all my books show this as a plain jane 390 crank yet this one has the full groove and is in a 63 center oiler 427. Is this really a 427 crank or is it just a 390 crank someone tossed in during a rebuild? Thanks

FE Technical Forum / Re: Will FPA Tri-Y headers support 700hp?
« on: May 20, 2018, 08:09:24 PM »
Those truck headers made power due to the exit length from the port not their primary size. Trucks have more room under the hood and the headers can make a straight exit out the port for longer than in any other application. Just like look at Barry’s dyno headers.

I have fpa tri-y's on my lowered 62 galaxie and have not scrapped them going over speed bumps and I am sitting pretty low. It's currently up on stands otherwise I'd measure for you, but I'll put it this way its low enough that I cannot slide a normal jack under the front. I need one of those low clearance jacks. I will say as well that my springs are like 20-30% stiffer than stock. I also go slow over speed bumps. Additionally the pipes coming off the collectors are the lowest point not the headers so the pipes would be first to suffer. no biggie. I could take pics if you want.

I’ll take those valve covers if payment falls through.

If memeory serves me correctly bbms do have raised ports. I think header port wise the normal headers will bolt up they are just higher on the head. This does make for a wider motor package.

Since it was brought up I'll add to it. Chasing threads, I just recently discovered thread chasing taps. I had always used bottoming taps or starting taps in a pinch. Never cared for them because at times it deformed the threads and made the hole sloppy. But man what a difference thread chasing taps made. For those that don't have them, get a set.
