Non-FE Discussion Forum / Old Mallory distributor parts compatibility
« on: April 15, 2020, 09:17:23 PM »
I have a dual point Mallory I'd planned to convert the top to electronic, but before I spread multiple units out for parts, I thought I'd ask here.

Are/were any of the Unilite SHAFTS dimensionally compatible with the old tach-drive points bodies at all?

This is a YL 496B. If there's a simple way to drop a modern shaft in there, I'd prefer to do that, too. (I'm okay losing the tach drive functionality if everything measures up otherwise)

Here's a data point that's probably sketchier for conversion than bushels to kilderkins, BUT the Crites teardrop hood on a 64 Galaxie leaves plenty of room for air cleaners over the MT cross ram.

If it's the MT, make sure it includes (or you have a line on) the distributor setup. Mine used an old Mallory that had been machined to fit, plus the pump drive extension and spacer. Love the look.

Once this one starts to get a little heat in it, it sounds perfect: https://youtu.be/GJg30Y8_4zY

Not a bad soundtrack while muting the Merc video.  ;D

The flu deaths have been spread over the entire country through several months, not compressed into the current COVID "hot spots" often doubling within a few days. And the 3000 deaths aren't currently as overwhelming as those hospitalized within the 160000 confirmed cases, again mostly in more densely populated areas.

Maybe something else, but the lower center (under 24) is often a troublemaker, I think. (at least when the engine is still in)

It's amazing how long some print publications have managed to hang on.

I create content for both print and web, and the shift in demand just over the last 10 years has been dramatic. Even small, local publications are drying up with advertisers favoring cheap or free online exposure, instant response, and on-demand analytics. I still prefer a physical product, maybe more than ever.

I hate the fact that you can plop down the cash and drive a 10 sec. new car out of the show room. It should come as a kit that you have to build. That would earn my respect. Just old fart thinking, I guess.

Great car, but yes.

Luckily it sets up the age-old teaching moment. There's nothing like being brought back down to earth by a homebrew Fairlane sorely in need of a paint job.

The guts of that distributor are such a wildcard.

216 then 235.

You doing this project is like Christmas come early for me.   ;D

I threw everything in the shop at a stock 352 in a 64 Galaxie for a couple of years just to see what would happen ahead of a 427 swap.
I can't wait to see some real dyno numbers with your skill and experience at work.

I can say that the untouched bottom end never gave up under 1x4, 3x2, and 2x4 (even a silly cross ram for a time) and it looked dapper with 64 427 manifolds on it.

It must come with age. Or maturity, heh. Those Chargers look good to me now. And pre-1964 Fords/Mercs are beautiful. I don't know why I couldn't see that when I was younger.

Just out of high school, I had a 66 Fairlane with a 390 and C6, and my cousin had a 66 GTO with a 400 (after the 389 was gone) and a 3-speed of all things. Seems like we raced a thousand times as we built those cars up, and it hooked me on the old Pontiacs, too.

I should have said...movie night here is 50% error-hunting fun anyway. It's why we enjoy them more after they go to video, as we don't have to worry about annoying other moviegoers.

I'm hopeful this movie will do a better job than I have of impressing upon my wife why a last-century battle between two car companies is relevant to the present day nonsense I do out in the shop.  ;D

Pausing on the dyno scene alone will get you a 30-second cringe.  But yeah, I'm looking forward to it, too.

I hope your place stays safe from the fire.

I never knew how hard it could be to remember *exactly* what was in my shop until I had a major burglary a few years ago. I still have to add small items to the "likely gone" list what seems like every couple of weeks.

That renewed my habit of photographing everything periodically. Open every drawer on the toolbox, every cabinet, etc. It only takes a few minutes, but it means a lot if you ever happen to need it.
